Eric Lo landed his first head varsity coaching job after recently being named the football coach at Huntington Beach High.

Lo took over March 8, replacing Mike Groscost, who resigned from the post.

Groscost was 20-30-1 in five seasons at his alma mater.

Lo, 31, had been an assistant on Groscost’s staff the last three years in the capacity of offensive line coach, special teams coordinator and strength conditioning coach.

“I enjoyed coaching under Mike,” Lo said. “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to be the head football coach at Huntington Beach High School. It’s a great school in a great community. We’ve got a great staff at the school and the kids are wonderful.

“My excitement level is definitely a ‘10’ right now. I’m definitely pumped about this opportunity.”

Lo has served the past nine years as an assistant coach at three different schools.

He spent five years at Riverside Community College, where he coached tight ends for one year before moving on to coach the defensive line and work as special teams coordinator during his final four years at the school.

In two of those final four years, the Tigers had the top-ranked defense in the Mission Conference. In three of those years, they ranked among the top 10 in the state in total defense.

From there, Lo moved on to coach the defensive line at John W. North High in Riverside. In his only year at the school, the Huskies went 14-0 and won a CIF championship in 2003.

In addition to coaching, Lo teaches physical education at Huntington Beach High.

“Being a head coach is something I’ve always wanted to do,” he said. “I accept the challenge here. In 2008, there will be upgrades to our football facilities and several great changes are in store. The sky’s the limit here. I’m really, really excited.”
