Laguna, Newport meeting again on court

The Laguna Beach High boys’ volleyball team will play twice today as the Orange County Championships gets underway with pool play action at three county schools.

Thirty-two teams will be split into two divisions. The Division I half of the tournament bracket will be played at Edison and Fountain Valley. The Division II bracket will be played at Newport Harbor.

Both divisions are broken down into four pools consisting of four teams. All matches are best-of-three.

The Division II finals will begin at 5:30 p.m. Monday with the Division I final to follow, both at Edison High.

Laguna, Foothill, Newport Harbor and Mission Viejo make up Pool 4 in Division I and will play at Edison.

The Breakers begin tournament pool play at 4 p.m. today against Newport Harbor. They will play their next match at 5 p.m., against Mission Viejo.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, Laguna takes on Foothill.

Laguna and Newport met last Friday in the Best of the West Tournament in Poway. The Sailors won that best-of-three match, 25-27, 25-20, 15-10.

Today marks the third time in the past 10 days that Laguna and Newport have faced each other. The Breakers defeated the Sailors, 3-1, in the team’s first meeting on March 7.

Also competing in Division I: Corona del Mar, Woodbridge, Edison and Capistrano Valley compose Pool 1 and will play at Edison; Los Alamitos, San Clemente, Santa Margarita and Marina are in Pool 2 and play at Fountain Valley; Mater Dei, Esperanza, Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach are in Pool 3 and play at Fountain Valley.

Corona del Mar, Los Alamitos, Mater Dei and Foothill are the top four seeds in the Division I bracket.

The Division II bracket consists of Lakewood, El Toro, Orange Lutheran and Edison “Green” (Pool 1); Dana Hills, Trabuco Hills, Coronado (Las Vegas)and Villa Park (Pool 2); Francis Parker, Tesoro, Servite and North Torrance (Pool 3), and Arcadia, Long Beach Millikan, Northwood and Claremont (Pool 4).

Lakewood, Dana Hills, Francis Parker and Arcadia are the top seeds in the Division II bracket.
