Orange Coast College 8,COSTA MESA — Seven Pirates had two or more hits as Orange Coast shelled Cypress’ Alex Curry, who came into the game with a 5-0 record and 1.46 ERA, in the Orange Empire Conference victory Thursday.

Mike Ferraro led the offensive charge going three for five and Ryan Shopshire pitched a complete game, striking out five to one walk, to improve to 4-2. Wes Kartch and Cory Olson were each two for five, with a run, an RBI and a triple for the Pirates (13-10, 4-3 in conference).

Eric Oliver was two for five with an RBI, Halston Barcelo was two for four with a run and an RBI, Chris Lum was two for five with two runs and Garrett Smith was two for three and drove in two runs.

Vanguard 9, Illinois Institute 1COSTA MESA — Lions first baseman Derek Craddock was three for four with a pair of doubles and Andrew Riddle pitched seven innings, striking out eight, while allowing only one earned run and three hits in the nonconference victory Thursday.

Nick Vaughn was two for four with a run and Keegan Freeman and Benjamin Linn were both two for three for Vanguard (12-6).

Freeman added a double.

Matt Voorhies and Linn each had three-run home runs in Vanguard’s eight-run third inning. Richard Jessup and Clinton Behrends combined for two innings of shutout relief.

MEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 4, Purdue 3IRVINE — Anteaters Aaron Yovan and Mustafa Ulukan swept their singles match then combined to win at No. 1 doubles in UC Irvine’s nonconference victory Thursday.

Shimpei Suzuki came back from a set down to win his singles match for the Anteaters (7-8), who swept their three doubles sets.

SWIMMING

NCAA ChampionshipsMINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The UC Irvine men’s 400 medley relay team finished sixth in the consolation finals of the event Thursday at the University of Minnesota.

The team, consisting of senior Eric Reilly, senior Dan Simonsen, junior Eddie Erazo and junior Randall Tom, swam in a time of 3 minutes, 11.69 seconds for 14th place overall. They were also 14th in the preliminaries Thursday morning, in 3:11.91.

Reilly, the lone UCI individual to compete in a solo event, was 42nd in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.24 seconds.

TRACK AND FIELD

Spring Break OpenNORTHRIDGE — UC Irvine sophomore Lauren Collins leads the heptathlon after the first day of the Spring Break Open at Cal State Northridge Thursday.

Collins scored 3,225 points in four events with marks of 25.83 seconds in the 200 meters, 14.46 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, a 5 feet, 9 3/4 -inch mark in the high jump and 34-2 3/4 in the shot put. The hurdles time ranks sixth in UCI history and she improved on her No. 2 mark in the high jump as she placed first in both events. Brittany Ricketts of Cal State Northridge is in second in the heptathlon with 3,080 points.

In the decathlon, UCI’s Eric Nyberg is in fifth place with 3,273 points, while teammates Shawn Maghzi (3,263) and Kirk Marciel (3,156) are seventh and ninth, respectively. Desi Burt of Cal State Los Angeles is in first with 3,996 points.
