HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP:Hart’s hit leads Estancia to sweep

COSTA MESA — Estancia High senior Riley Hart delivered a two-out RBI single to right in the bottom of the eighth inning, helping the Eagles’ baseball team to a 3-2 win over Rancho Alamitos that completed a doubleheader sweep Saturday at TeWinkle Park.

The Eagles (4-4) also defeated Rancho Alamitos, 9-7.

Taylor McClanahan pitched an inning of relief in the nightcap, earning his first win of the year for Estancia.

In Game 1, Estancia jumped out to a 5-0 lead on Rancho Alamitos (2-6) before the visitors rallied within two. But Ryan Redding’s two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth gave the Eagles some much-needed breathing room.

Redding was two for three in the game, scored four runs and stole three bases. Ian Abernathy had a triple, and Blake Pinto, who picked up the win in the first game, had two hits in each of the wins over Rancho Alamitos.

Estancia opens Orange Coast League play on Tuesday, when it plays host to Calvary Chapel.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Orange County ChampionshipsHUNTINGTON BEACH — The Corona del Mar High won its pool, but lost its first match of the season at Edison High Saturday.

Junior Jeff Carlson had eight kills and junior Gus Ellis six to lead the Sea Kings to a 25-18, 25-17 win over Capistrano Valley to start the day. Senior Phil Bannan added 22 assists and senior Sam Stafford had four kills and four digs.

Ellis then had 12 kills and Bannan 27 assists in Corona del Mar’s loss to San Clemente, 25-20, 23-25, 15-12. Spencer Brown had four digs.

Coach Steve Conti said the Sea Kings committed too many errors against San Clemente.

Corona del Mar (14-1), ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division II, play at Capistrano Valley Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Orange County ChampionshipsHUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor nearly advanced to the championship bracket, but lost to Mission Viejo, 25-23, 26-24, at Edison High Saturday.

Had the Sailors (9-6) won the match, they would have advanced. Junior Tucker Peluses led Newport Harbor with 10 kills, while seniors Weston Dunlap and Boyd Tyrell-Grubbs added five each in the loss to Mission Viejo. Juniors Mark Liebermann and Max Volz had four kills each, junior Andrew Kaban had six digs and sophomore Darren Leggett produced 28 assists.

The Sailors then won three matches in consolation action. Dunlap tallied 25 kills overall in the victories over Fountain Valley (25-18, 25-22), Woodbridge (25-16, 25-13) and Huntington Beach (25-17, 25-16).

Peluses contributed 18 kills total. Liebermann had 10 kills in the win over Woodbridge and eight kills to go with three aces in the win over Huntington Beach.

Newport Harbor will play at Mira Costa on Friday. Sailors Coach Dan Glenn said they will learn of Kyle Caldwell’s status on Monday. Caldwell, a 6-foot-8 junior, has been out with a stress fracture in his foot.

TRACK AND FIELD

California High Distance CarnivalLA MIRADA — The Estancia High boys’ ‘A’ team of Wes Barloon, Santiago Gudino, Fernando Orozco and Cesar Casillas finished second in the 4x800-meter relay in 8 minutes, 56 seconds at La Mirada High Saturday.

The Eagles’ ‘B’ team, consisting of Enrique Vivar, Diego Carrasco, Bryan Torres and Vinnie Rodriguez took third in 9:14.

Barloon, Casillas, Vivar and Orozco were fourth (19:43) in the 4x1,600 relay. In the distance medley relay, Estancia placed sixth in 12:25, as Ryan White ran the 400; Bryan Torres the 800, Vinnie Rodriguez the 1,200 and Ricky Saldana the 1,600.

On the girls side, Sindy Ramirez, Jennifer Thomas, Kathy Fuentes and Eunice Rodriguez finished in second place in the 4x800 in 11:16. The Eagles were also second in the distance medley. Thomas (400), Ramirez (800), Rodriguez (1,200) and Fuentes (1,600) came in at 14:44.

BASEBALL

Sage Hill 14, Whitney 0Sage Hill 6, Whitney 5CERRITOS — The Lightning received key pitching performances from freshman Alex Jimenez in both games, sweeping the Academy League doubleheader Friday at Whitney.

In the first game, Jimenez threw a complete-game, five-inning no hitter. He struck out 10, and only a fourth-inning error by Sage Hill (3-1, 3-0 in league) denied him the perfect game. Offensively, J.J. Beruldsen hit two home runs and had four RBIs, Doug McAfee also homered and Travis Duncan went three for three for the Lightning.

In the second game, Sage Hill led most of the way over Whitney (1-3, 0-3), but the Wildcats rallied for three runs in the seventh before Jimenez induced a bases-loaded, two-out fly out to earn his first varsity save. Freshman Sean Vogel earned the win, allowing no hits and one run over three innings.

Senior J.J. Schumacher hit his second home run of the season for the Lightning, and Duncan went three for four with two RBIs.

Sage Hill plays host to Brethren Christian on Tuesday.

SURFING

CCSA ContestHUNTINGTON BEACH — The Estancia High surf team did well at the third CCSA contest of four, which took place March 10 at Goldenwest Street.

In the first heat, surfing short board, Eric Mickelson, Bobby Lenke and Nick Fowler all placed first, with teammates Jeff Crossen and Michael McRoberts both placing third. On long board, Lenke placed first, and on body board, Cody Thornton placed third.

In the short board finals, Mickelson was first, while Crossen, Lenke and Fowler all finished I second place. Lenke took third in the long board finals.
