The Daily Pilot asked Corona del Mar High School 10th-graders, “What was the most interesting thing you learned from your veteran?”

“The most surprising thing I learned was about the emotion and the humanity attached to the attacks.” -- Bayley Sprowl, 16, Newport Beach

“We learned not only about his war experiences, but his personal experiences as well. Since he was on a ship, it was hard to write letters and converse with his family.” -- Kelly Moorhead, 16, Newport Beach

“Our veteran emigrated from Britain, and it was amazing how much he believed in this country’s stance on the war in Vietnam.” -- David Wang, 16, Newport Beach

“He really emphasized freedom and that we’re so lucky to be living in America. In other countries, freedom’s not a given.” -- Alexa Rome, 15, Newport Beach

“Probably how he talked about fate and how we can’t regret anything. We shouldn’t blame ourselves for things that happened, because it’s part of the job.” -- Heather May, 15, Newport Beach
