FAIR GAME:The mature solution for Costa Mesa council

In Costa Mesa, the big news is not illegal immigration. And no, they haven’t all been rounded up. And no, it’s not the gangs, although the Police Department would like to focus on that.

No, it’s even bigger. It’s Seatgate.

Everyone around town is anxiously waiting to find out who gets to sit where on the City Council dais.

Sure, you’ve heard the big breaking news — Mayor Allan Mansoor wants his voting buddy, Wendy Leece, to sit where Linda Dixon sits. It’s something about wanting her to be able to learn from City Manager Allan Roeder. And Dixon, well, let’s put it this way: She ain’t moving.

But I’ve come up with an idea. And I think this group just might be mature enough to pull it off.

I’ll bring in an old record player and an old record. A song like, “All Around the Mulberry Bush”

Anyway, we get the five council members circling four chairs in the middle of the council chambers and when the music stops, well you know how it’s played.

Winner gets to sit where he or she wants and so on.

C’mon, guys, play nice. No pushing.

With this group, I’m afraid the next time someone wants to take a recess we’ll find some of this group out on the playground playing on the swings.

For a group of us, it’s off to the Arches tonight. The clock is ticking, and before you know it, Danny Marcheano will close the doors for the last time. Take this as a reminder to get in there before he does. All of the food is great, but I have to be honest, I love those bread sticks.

What a great week out at Newport Beach Country Club with the Toshiba Classic. Pro-ams, Breakfast with the Champions, the Shot from the Top. Perfect weather, good crowds, great golf and a record $1.31 million to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. It doesn’t get any better than that.

To Jeff Purser, his staff and all of the community volunteers, you did a phenomenal job. You made Newport Beach proud.

And to Hank Adler, the tournament chairman who rides off into the sunset after 10 years and $10 million to charity, our best.

Next up, Ira Garbutt? More on that to come later.

For Purser and Hoag Hospital, it’s on to their new venture with the Newport Beach Breakers tennis team this summer. This thing could get good. Stay tuned.
