ALL-LEAGUE BOYS’ BASKETBALL:Kaluz named Co-MVP

Corona del Mar High 6-foot-9 junior center Stefan Kaluz has been named co-MVP of the Pacific Coast League in boys’ basketball by league coaches after leading the Sea Kings to a share of the league title.

Kaluz, who shares the MVP award with Laguna Hills senior Garrett Fritz, averaged 21 points, 12 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game and shot 64% from the floor. Kaluz led the Sea Kings to a 7-1 league record and then to the CIF Southern Section Division III-A championship.

The four other starters helping CdM (22-8) win the league crown and reach the opening round of the Division III State tournament after winning the school its fifth section title in school history also received all-league honors.

Junior guard Joe Eberhard and senior guard Eddie Lane joined Kaluz on the first team, and senior point guard Austin Evett and forward John Joyce made the second team.

The 6-5 Eberhard ranked second on the team in points (9.7), rebounds (6.8), assists (2.8) and steals (1.8) per game. Eberhard led the team in three-point shooting, making 34 of 68 (50%).

Lane’s nine points per game were third best on the team and 2.1 steals led everyone. He averaged 1.5 assists per game.

Evett averaged a team-high 2.9 assists per game to go with 5.5 points and one steal per game. The 6-7 Joyce scored 6.8 points and grabbed 6.1 rebounds.

ORANGE COAST LEAGUE

Costa Mesa had senior guards Larry Puente and Moses Titus receive first-team All-Orange Coast League recognition in boys’ basketball from league coaches. Estancia brothers Taylor McClanahan and Troy McClanahan were the only Estancia players to receive second-team honors.

The 6-foot-4 Puente led the team in practically every category and to the CIF Southern Section Division III-A first-round playoffs. Puente averaged 19.5 points, 13.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 3.3 blocks and 2.4 steals per game. Three times he scored more than 20 points and grabbed at least 20 rebounds in a game.

Titus was second on the team in scoring (13.7), and first in three-pointers made (71) and steals (2.6). He had nine three-pointers in a 71-69 comeback win over Burroughs on Dec. 28. Twice Titus finished with seven three-pointers in a game.

Costa Mesa finished 17-11 overall and 5-4 in league, good for third place.

For Estancia, Troy, a sophomore guard, averaged nine points per game and his 43 three-pointers ranked in the top five in league. Taylor, a 6-foot-3 senior forward, averaged four points and four rebounds per game. The Eagles finished 2-24 overall and 0-9 in league.

SUNSET LEAGUE

Newport Harbor’s twin towers Kyle Caldwell and Weston Dunlap received first-team All-Sunset League honors.

The duo was instrumental in helping the Sailors finish tied for second place in their new league. The Sailors (16-12, 5-5 in league) also advanced to the second round of CIF Southern Section Division I-A playoffs, becoming what Coach Larry Hirst said is the fourth Sailors team to play three playoff games.

Caldwell, a 6-foot-8 junior center, led the team with 19.6 points and 12.4 rebounds per game, and shot 59% from the floor. Dunlap, a 6-7 senior forward, was second on the team in points (11.9), rebounds (9.1) and field goal percentage (58).

ACADEMY LEAGUE

Sage Hill School guard Jamie McGee led the Academy League in scoring for the second straight year and once again was named to the first-team All-Academy League in boys’ basketball.

During his junior year, McGee averaged 18.4 points to go with 5.1 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 2.3 steals per game and led the Lightning (14-13, 6-4 for third place in league) to their first CIF Southern Section home playoff game in school history.

McGee, who shot 57% from the field, is a three-time all-league selection. The first one came as a freshman, when he made the second team.

Two other Lightning juniors were selected to the second team, starting with forward Connor Rose and guard Nick Witte. Sophomore Troy Astorino was an honorable mention.

Rose was second in scoring (9.5) and rebounding (4.3), and Witte averaged 8.9 points and 3.5 assists per game. Astorino put up five points and grabbed 2.8 rebounds per game.
