A’s get early start to down Mets

The A’s jumped out to an early lead on the Mets in their Majors Division game Saturday at Ocean View Little League and made that strong start stand in an eventual 9-3 victory.

The A’s scored five runs on five hits in the first inning. The big blow was a two-run run home run by Grant Mayeaux.

Pitching also was a big asset to the A’s as Mayeaux and starter Max Gibbs combined to allow just two hits. All three Cubs runs were unearned. Gibbs went 2 2/3 innings with three strikeouts, and Mayeaux finished the game and struck out five.

Mayeaux also led the offense with a double in addition to his home run. Gibbs doubled, Robert Cornwell had a double and RBI, and Kevin Engesser, Brandon Macedo, Joseph Ratzlaff and Noah Bartos all had hits.

Getting hits for the Mets were Jake Bryant and Billy Fay. The big defensive play for the Mets came from Sam Mahdad, who made a running catch in left field to deny the A’s an extra base hit.

A’s 8, Dodgers 4

The A’s overcame an early four-run deficit to defeat the Dodgers.

The Dodgers used two hits and four errors by the A’s to produce all four of their runs in the top of the first inning. The A’s bounced back to score three runs in the first inning, two in second inning and their final three in the fourth.

Brandon Macedo tripled among two hits, Grant Mayeaux and Tyler Hammrock each doubled among two hits and each had two RBI, and Kevin Engesser and Joseph Ratzlaff each had two hits to lead the A’s on offense.

Ratzlaff started on the mound and got the win. He allowed three hits in two innings with three strikeouts. Mayeaux threw relief in the final four innings and allowed just one hit to go along with eight strikeouts.

Chris Smith, Arnold Zinovyer and Nick Wannall had hits for the Dodgers.

Yankees 12, Angels 7

The last game played Saturday at the league fields turned out to be a high-scoring affair as the Yankees won for the third time in four games.

Zachary Gates hit a two-run home run in the top of the first that highlighted a five-run start for the Yankees. The Dodgers retaliated in the bottom-half of the inning when Jake Arledge hit a lead-off home run to straight-away centerfield. Dallas Broge later singled and score on a Yankees error to trim the lead to 5-2.

In the top of the second, the Yankees sent nine batters to the plate and scored four more runs to up their lead to 9-2. Gavin Ryan-Massa was hit by a pitch before Jake Bauers, Gates and Jared Goodman singled in runs. Jake Poss doubled to right field to close out the inning’s scoring.

The Dodgers got a run back in the bottom of the second inning behind back-to-back doubles by John Weber and Nick Wanmall. In the third, the Yankees added two more runs on a lead-off homer to right field by Andrew Wall and an RBI single by Gates that increased the lead to 11-3.

In the Dodgers’ half of the third, Arledge hit his second homer of the game; this one lined off the new league scoreboard in right field. The team tacked on three more runs in the fifth behind three walks and a double by Mathew Andrews.

Dee Atwood closed for the Yanks in the sixth and retired the side in order with two strikeouts. Yankee centerfielder Brian Fee made an outstanding catch of a ball headed into the left-centerfield gap to end the game.

The Yankees were led at the plate by Bauers, who had two hits and two runs scored; Gates at three for three with five RBI; Goodman with two hits and two runs; Poss with two hits and two RBI; Wall who went two for three, and Brian Fee who singled.

Arledge finished two for three, and Broge, Weber, Wanmall and Andrews each had hits.

Yankees 3, Mets 0

The Mets suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of Yankees pitcher Zachary Gates, who threw a complete-game, one-hitter shutout.

In a pitchers’ duel between Gates and the Mets’ Billy Fay, the Yankees were able to get three runs off Fay in the bottom of the second inning. Jared Goodman had a lead-off single, Joseph Rivera was hit by a pitch, and Jason Baxter singled to load the bases. Patrick Poss then smacked a bases-clearing double to provide the Yanks with their three runs.

Goodman and Baxter each went two for two, and Brian Fee doubled.

The Mets’ lone hit was an infield single by Brandon Fields in the fourth. Gates registered 15 strikeouts and didn’t allow a walk.

Fay struck out eight in four innings on the mound. Wyatt Albert pitched the final inning for the Mets and struck out the side in order.

At Seaview Little League:

Minor A Division

Angels 2, Cubs 1

Truman Bazer’s single to right-centerfield in the bottom of the sixth scored Max Simon and lifted the Angels past the Cubs.

Simon, Devon Reese, Sam Cooper, Grant Horton and Bazer combined pitching efforts and gave up just four hits with 12 strikeouts.

The Angels had nine hits, led by Bazer, Reese, CJ Stovall, Wyatt Collins, Adam Hepburn and Noah Belkin.

Yankees 14, Angels 11

The Yankees took a 14-4 lead into the sixth inning, where the Angels rallied for seven runs before the comeback fell short.

Little League:

Majors Division

Dodgers 5, Giants 2

A two-RBI single in the first inning by Jaycen Watson got the Dodgers going toward their win over the Giants.

Megan Feuerstein singled and added a two-run double in the fifth, Don Pierce singled twice, and Kyle Crossen doubled for the Dodgers

Crossen, Jason Hartert, Matt Nathan, Matthew Levinson and Pierce combined to hold the Giants to two runs.

Angels 8, Cardinals 1

Cardinals lead-off hitter Billy Morehouse a solo home run to open the game, but it was all Angels after that.

Key Halos hits were recorded by David Mastro, Zack Honnes, Allen Marques, Ryan Fishel, Nick Reed and Dillon Millar.

Angels second baseman David Clegg made a double play in the third inning to prevent the Cardinals from scoring, and Tyler Odey, Brodie Barton and Honnes shared pitching duties.

Minor A Division

Rangers 13, Pirates 12

Tanner Watson’s grand slam in the bottom of the fourth lifted the Rangers into an 11-9 lead, and Daylan Harmeyer delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the sixth to complete the come-from-behind victory.

Starter Adam McBeth gave up two runs in three innings pitched for the Rangers. Ryan Nickerson, Noah Nelson, Kobie Anton, Jacob Smith, Zak Barber, Frank Hoshijima, Alex Petroff and Michael Boyack all contributed on defense.
