The Ocean View High baseball team overcame a slow start to the 2007 season by winning its first three Golden West League games — each at the expense of league newcomer Segerstrom.

The Seahawks defeated the Jaguars 8-2, 5-3 and 6-2.

In a 6-2 win Friday, sophomore Andrew Bynum picked up an RBI single in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Bynum also relieved starter Cameron Holz and recorded the pitching win, his first of the year.

Manny Guzman tripled for the Seahawks.

A flu-ridden Ocean View was hampered by errors and poor pitching at the start of the season, resulting in an 0-3 record out of the gate, Coach Shane Borkowski said.

“As we got healthy, we have put together some wins in the last two weeks,” he said. “Although we’re just getting to 100% healthy, we have a lot of work ahead of us, and we’re looking forward to a competitive league again this year.”

In a Sunset League opener Friday, Billy Silvestri hit a solo home run and delivered a game-winning, run-scoring double in the bottom of the eighth inning that lifted host Edison to a 2-1 victory over Marina. Senior Greg Davis went the distance to collect his second win.

Also Friday, Kyle Ammons ended a tense Sea View League opener between host Huntington and Foothill in the bottom of the 10th by hitting a lead-off home run that carried the Oilers to a 4-3 win.

Ammons also doubled twice. Randy Guite kept the Oilers alive with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth that tied the score at 3-3. Mike Wagner also had three hits for the Oilers.

Senior Justin Pegram, the third of three Oilers to take the mound, got the win.

Host Edison tied for fifth place and Huntington Beach lost to Newport Harbor in the ninth-place match as the three-day Orange County Championships boys’ volleyball tournament came to an end Monday at Edison.

In the Division I final, Esperanza defeated Mater Dei to win the title. Lakewood held off Dana Hills to win the Division II crown.

On the first day of pool play, Edison lost to Corona del Mar (2-1), defeated El Toro (2-1) and Capistrano Valley (2-0) and finished with a loss to Claremont (2-0). The Chargers defeated Mission Viejo (2-0) and lost to Los Alamitos (2-0) on the second day of play Saturday.

Huntington defeated Fountain Valley (2-0), Laguna Beach (2-0) and Capistrano Valley (2-1), but lost to Newport Harbor (2-0).

Marina High School also competed at the boys’ volleyball tournament. The Vikings lost games to San Clemente (2-0), Santa Margarita (2-1), Woodbridge (2-0) and Fountain Valley (2-0).

Visiting Marina scored an impressive nonleague doubleheader triumph Saturday over Woodbridge, beating the Warriors 5-0 and 12-3.

Michelle Fuzzard pitched a two-hitter and struck out 10 and offensively doubled twice. Alisha Rosen had three hits.

Rosen also had a big game in the second game with four hits and two RBI in a 12-3 rout. Taysia Kaufman got the win.

Edison was a 3-0 nonleague winner over visiting Segerstrom. The Chargers scored all three of their runs in the third inning with Monica Bledsoe driving in one of the runs with a triple and Courtney Gonzales the other two with a single.

Starter Sarah Munson struck out three and got the win.

In lacrosse

Huntington Beach held a one-point halftime lead on host Cathedral Catholic, but the visiting Oilers ended up on the short end of a 5-4 score at Del Mar Heights.

Huntington led, 4-3, at the half but the Dons scored twice in the third quarter and never relinquished the lead. The Oilers came up with a big offensive assault in the fourth quarter, but could not convert any of their 12 shot attempts.

Jeff Hennes scored twice and Ryan Tully and Nick Refice each scored once. Louis Roupoli had an assist and goalie Wyatt Fullmer had 14 saves.

Previously, Huntington played strong down the stretch against Tesoro but still suffered an 8-6 defeat. The Oilers lost despite leading in shots on goal, 13-8, and ground ball recoveries, 15-7.

Derek Rosas led the Oilers offense with three goals. Hennes and Pat Soriano also scored, Refice and Tully had assists, and Rosas and Shane Thomas each had eight ground-ball recoveries.

In a battle between crosstown rivals, Rosas scored seven goals and assisted four other scores to power Huntington past Marina, 16-7. Sam Clarke scored four goals and Hennes, Refice, Tully, Soriano and Benny Nguyen all scored once for the Oilers.
