GREER’S BEST BUYS:Unique clothing styles from Generic Youth

The Generic Youth store in Costa Mesa sells its own label that offers 14- to 25-year-olds a niche brand that’s affordable and they can call their own. Jeff Yokoyama, founder of Modern Amusement, and his 17-year-old daughter Coco created Generic Youth as an alternative to mainstream fashions and labels. Generic Youth apparel offers youthful silhouettes, artsy details, and one-of-a-kind fabric combinations.

The Westside Costa Mesa store also serves as a research and development studio where the father-and-daughter team brainstorms ideas for upcoming collections and test styles. Former St. John Knits tailor Sergio Chiguit expertly handcrafts each garment right in the shop. He adds premium tailoring not found in mass-marketed apparel. Each piece is different, whether it’s an irregularly placed pocket on a tee, recycled fabric appliqued on a hoodie sweatshirt, over-dyed fabric, or a variety of blank tees just waiting to be silk-screened.

You can choose from Bermuda shorts, nylon shorts, button-down summer shirts, skinny leg denim, and a spring girls’ line with stretch French terry pants, appliqued jersey tees, and more. Perhaps best of all, this kind of style, quality and uniqueness comes at a price far below similar lines. Plus, Jeff and Coco are super friendly and customer-oriented.

The Bikram Yoga Center at the Camp teaches the Bikram method of yoga — a series of 26 postures and two breathing exercises that’s designed for everyone. The heated room makes you sweat, and enthusiasts say you can increase balance, strengthen your body, prevent illness and injury, promote weight loss and even retard aging.

THE WHEY

Pacific Whey Cafe & Baking Company recently opened its fourth Orange County location at South Coast Plaza. Pacific Whey is known for its tempting pastries, homemade comfort food — made from scratch every day — and breakfast served all day. Lunch begins at 11 a.m. and dinner is served from 5 p.m. on.

The extensive breakfast options include omelets, scrambles, crepes, breakfast burritos, quesadillas, and filet mignon and eggs any style. At lunch and dinner the choices range from custom-ordered vegetarian and ground sirloin burgers, grilled sandwiches, cold sandwiches, entree salads and comfort food specials. Choose filet mignon over biscuits; and Pacific Whey pot pie, an upside down version, where the bowl is the crust. Other choices include made-from-scratch lasagna, with ground sirloin or spinach and artichoke; old fashioned meatloaf with port wine mushroom sauce; and the best-selling Pacific Whey summer salad, a blend of field greens, Medjool dates, carrots, red onion, goat cheese, toasted walnuts, strawberries and grapes tossed with strawberry vinaigrette.

And you can pick up delicious bakery items to go. Popular items include cinnamon custard Danishes, cinnamon rolls, flourless chocolate tortes, cobblers, bread pudding, cakes and pies. A dozen varieties of cookies, baked fresh daily, include their signature oatmeal cherry toffee and bittersweet chocolate espresso. Pacific Whey’s ambience has a classic European feel, with a Carrera marble pastry case, silver patina ceiling, vintage posters and community tables. Pacific Whey, on Level 1 in the Crate & Barrel/Macy’s Home Store wing of South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, is open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday; 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
