Newport Harbor 197, Edison 204HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Sailors knocked off the team Coach Scott Tarnow said would be the toughest in the Sunset League with another balanced performance in the league opener Thursday at Seacliff Country Club’s par-36 course.

Bryce Greeley and Chase Behr each posted two-over par 38s for Newport (6-4, 1-0 in league). Justin Morehead (39), Andrew Skjonsby (40) and Ben Barnel (42) also scored for the Sailors.

Laguna Hills 189,LAGUNA WOODS — Sea Kings senior David Su shot a two-under-par 34 to earn medalist honors in the Pacific Coast League match at Laguna Woods Golf Club Thursday.

Newport Harbor 17, Edison 1HUNTINGTON BEACH — John Hutchinson swept all three of his No. 2 singles matches to lead the Sailors in their Sunset League opener Thursday.

Daron Arnold and Connor Curry only gave up two games en route to sweeping their No. 2 doubles matches for Newport Harbor (3-3).

Corona del Mar 13, Laguna Hills 5LAGUNA HILLS — The doubles tandems of Dustin Hladek and Chris Damion and Bryan Buchert and Charlie Corum carried the Sea Kings by sweeping all six of their sets in the Pacific Coast League match Thursday.

Buchert, a junior, and Corum, a freshman, teamed together for the first time and swept for CdM (9-1, 2-0 in league), which is the No. 5-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division I.

SOFTBALL

Downey 2, Newport Harbor 1 (nine innings)NEWPORT BEACH — Robin Gautschi’s RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh inning tied the game, 1-1, and forced extra innings, but the Sailors gave up a run in the ninth and couldn’t come back in a nonleague game Thursday.

Jane Messersmith pitched nine innings, striking out seven and allowing four hits and no earned runs for Newport Harbor (1-6). The Sailors play Corona del Mar Saturday in a consolation game of the Northwood Tournament at Bill Barber Park in Irvine at 6 p.m.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

CIF RelaysLONG BEACH — Corona del Mar High had two teams advance to Saturday’s finals at Belmont Plaza.

Chelsea Pike, Paige O’Brien, Cari Levine, Katie Indvik, Britney Wigley and Heather Van Hiel advanced in the 6x50-yard freestyle. Pike, Van Hiel, Indvik and Levine will be in the finals in the 4x50 butterfly.

The finals begin at 6 p.m.

TRACK AND FIELD

Newport Harbor 82,Los Alamitos 90,LOS ALAMITOS — Seniors Allison Stokke and Jessica Robson posted their highest marks of the season to lead the Sailors’ girls team to the victory in the Sunset League opener Thursday.

Stokke cleared 13 feet which Sailors Coach Eric Tweit said is the best this season in CIF Southern Section. Robson had a personal record in the high jump, clearing 5-8, which Tweit said is tied for tops in the state. Robson’s best coming in was 5-4.

Robson also won the long jump with a mark of 16-7 and was second in the shot put. Laura Clayton was a double winner for Newport Harbor, taking the triple jump with a personal record of 36-3 and the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.8 seconds. Clayton was also second in the long jump (15-7).

Junior Cassidy Gayner won the 400 (1:02) and the 300 hurdles (48.6). Senior Taylor Bryson won the 800 (2:30.2) and 1,600 (5:28) and senior Melissa Mead won the 3,200 (11:50.3) and was second in the 1,600 (5:34) for the Sailors.

Freshman Brooke Nelson, in her first meet, won the 100 in 13.0.

On the boys’ side, sophomore Coby Peterson took the 400 (54.6), junior Rex Nelson won the 1,600 (4:40.8) and sophomore Jake Dawson won the 3,200 (10:19.5).

Corona del Mar 101, Beckman 23Beckman 65, Corona del Mar 62CORONA DEL MAR — Senior Tiffany Liu won the 100 hurdles (16.1 seconds), triple jump (36 feet, 8 inches) and long jump (17 feet even) for the Sea King girls in their Pacific Coast League-opening win Thursday at CdM.

Shelby Buckley won the 800 meters (2 minutes, 15.7 seconds) and the 1,600 meters (4:59.8) for CdM, also anchoring the winning 1,600 meter relay team.

Also for CdM (3-0), Laura Bilder won the high jump (4-6) and Ann Klunder won the shot put (32-0). Sarah Cummings won the 3,200 meters in 11:04, and Sarah Keddington won the 400 meters (1:01.7).

The CdM boys (1-2), meanwhile, suffered the upset loss.

CdM, missing banged up freshman Alex Swigert, didn’t win a field event. Senior Spencer Aguilar was the only two-time boys’ winner for CdM, taking the 110 hurdles (15.4 seconds) and 300 hurdles (41.0).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Calvary Chapel def. Sage HillNEWPORT COAST — Bayle Smith had a team-high 22 kills for the Lightning in a 25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 25-12, 17-15 nonleague loss Thursday.

Joey Booth had seven kills, Michael Bear had 39 assists and Harlan Webster had two aces for Sage (5-4).
