Unplanned docking

A 63-foot, steel-hulled fishing vessel went aground on the Newport Beach coastline at about 2 a.m. Friday. There were no injuries, and the boat sustained no damage.

A substantial wave pushed the San Pedro-based Emerald Sea into a sand bar near 35th Street while the five to six crew members on board fished close to shore, said Newport Beach Fire Department spokeswoman Jennifer Schulz.

With the Newport Beach Sheriff’s Department and lifeguards on scene, the vessel was expected to remain on shore throughout the day, until the next high tide could set it off about 1 a.m. Saturday.
