Orange Coast College freshman Courtney Ford was named first-team all-state in women’s basketball, becoming just the fourth OCC player to be so honored.

“Courtney is one of the most competitive players that I have coached in my 18 years at Coast,” Pirates Coach Mike Thornton said. “She is one of those rare players who loves to have the ball in her hands at the end of close games. She is fearless and always wants to take the big shot.”

Ford averaged 20.3 points per game, which led all freshmen in the state. She also averaged 7.2 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 3.2 steals per game, earning Orange Empire Conference Most Valuable Player honors.

“Barring any injuries, she undoubtedly will end up near the top of a list of career statistics lists when she completes her career at Coast,” Thornton said. “The really good thing is, as far as our team is concerned, she can and hopefully will continue to improve and be a better player next season.”

Ford joins just three other OCC first-team all-state selections, including LeAnn Kazmer (1994), Jamie Shine (1996) and Jennifer Ludwicki (1998).

“[Ford is] in great company with LeAnn, Jamie and Jennifer,” Thornton said. “Courtney will be one of our tri-captains next year and hopefully will help lead us to another successful and championship season.”

The Pirates finished the season with a record of 28-4, 14-0 in conference. It was the Pirates’ first perfect run through their conference schedule.

They were upset in the second round of the playoffs by San Bernardino Valley, 61-59.
