Newport Beach Little League

AAA Division

Cardinals 10, Red Sox 6: The Cardinals’ Teddy Somekh had a two-RBI triple in the third inning, giving the Cardinals a 5-3 lead that they never relinquished March 10. Ryan Kleinman (three for four with two RBIs), Ryan Maister (two for four with a triple), and Patrick Sandel (three for four with a double) stood out for the winners. Max Carr, Erika Lynn-Green and J.B. Lee added singles and Joshua Anderson reached base twice. Kleinman and Lee pitched four solid innings, allowing only one run.

The Red Sox were paced by Kellen Ochi, who had a home run and a double for three RBIs. Newport Harbor Baseball Assn.

Pony Division

Wachovia 18, Coldwell Banker 13: Andrew Machoski had four hits, including three doubles, for Wachovia in its win on March 10. Cort Hastings was two for two and reached base four times. Bryce Ashton, Ryan Banning and Billy Macdonald each had a double. Brooks Brady and Josh Harrison had singles.

Sam Cubeiro led Wachovia (3-2) on the mound, allowing three runs over four innings.

Mustang Division

Citrus Motors 5, Cove Motors 2: Citrus right-hander Nick Belida pitched three strong innings on March 10, yielding only two unearned runs in the first.

For Citrus Motors, Zane Waysz’s line-drive single to left in the third cut the deficit to 2-1. In the top of the third, Jeremiah Sheldon lined a single to left to tie the game, then Sheldon scored on Jake Genova’s fielder’s choice. Luke Genova pitched two scoreless innings and had a two-run single in the fifth.

Sheldon struck out three in the sixth. Great defense was also played by Citrus Motors’ Layne Hilley, David Schaeffer, Cole Gallishaw, Mitch Steinke, Chase Alibrando and Mike Lugo.

Girls’ under 12

Costa Mesa 5, N. Irvine 0: Jackie Tanner scored two goals to help create a 4-0 halftime lead March 10. Jacqueline Hubbard also scored, Cristina Tuer and Jayme Krohnfeldt combined on a goal and Emily Gruber assisted Albamaria Barrios for the final goal. Goalie Jessica Prather, along with the always solid defensive play of Claudia Huerta, Marlene Calderon, and Amy Heil, combined for the shutout.

Kayla Stephens, Emily Grady, Alondra Novoa and Anna Vivanco dominated the midfield.

Girls’ under 10

Corona del Mar Sharks 4, Costa Mesa 0: The Sharks, coached by Mark Duss, won their Spring Select season opener on March 10. Samantha Pratt led the Sharks with two goals, while Angela Carreras and Bailey Godber both scored as well. Two of the four goals were assisted by Madeleine Francis who, along with Grace Chalmers, supported the Sharks at midfield.

Tenacious offensive players Morgan Duss and Julia Mouchawar kept the pressure on with quick footwork, and Lauren Berty provided great strength defensively. Lauren Castleton shined in goal.

Corona del Mar Shockers 6, Tustin 0: Shockers forward Kelly Mulcaire and wings Isebelle Eckel and Caroline Schmidhauser worked well together, scoring all six goals for the Shockers. Midfielders Brooke Schweitzer and Allyson Frazier constantly fed the offense. Madison Binder, Madalyn Ruiz and Madeleine Schmidhauser helped goalie Megan Ferlita post the shutout.

Girls’ under 10

Soccer Freaks vs. Blue Monkies: The Soccer Freaks opened their season with a strong team effort. Isabel Leveque scored goals in both the first and fourth quarters, and Emily Halphide scored in the second. The team also received stellar offensive play from Rachel Digiambattista, Felicity Giddings, Kate Hefner, Rylie Siegfried and Collette Vigil, as well as dominant defense from Julianna Eifler, Miranda Hart, Abigael Bullock and Sadie Garner.

Girls’ under 8

Tidal Wave vs. Pink: Missy Taylor and Julia Ackerman scored for Tidal Wave, with strong offensive support from Siena Amoroso and Isabella Morris. Brianna Smith made some outstanding passes in her first-ever soccer game. Hannah Alderson, also a new player, made an incredible run at the goal. Destry Comp and Lauren Henke provided strong defense with support from Emma Hammond. Vanessa Crandall stopped several shots as Tidal Wave goalie.

BASKETBALL

National Junior Basketball Championship Series

Division I

Jurupa Trojans 58, Newport-Mesa Red Storm 52: Down 19 points in the first quarter, in their final game of the season, the Red Storm rallied to within two with two minutes remaining, but could never come closer. They were led by eighth-grade all-star Zach Asdourian who had his best game of the season with 26 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.

Chris Robertson added 10 points and 16 rebounds for the Red Storm. Trace Curet and Wyeth Rietveld added eight points each while Matt LeValley and Chris Piggott played stellar defense.

El Toro Suns 49, Newport-Mesa Spartans 37: The Spartans (10-2) started slow and never caught up to the hot-shooting Suns. Eighth-grader Cody Caldwell led the Spartans with 18 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocked shots, while Kyle Sherburne, Daniel Degree, Henri Crockett and Kyle Orton all played well in the loss.

Cypress Scouts 56, Newport-Mesa Waves 47: The Waves (8-4) ended the season with a loss in Dana Point. The Waves were led by all-star Adam Spies, who had 16 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals, while fellow all-star Alex Turney added 14 points and six rebounds in only three quarters.

Eighth-grade all-star Max Carpenter had 10 points and 10 rebounds while Reid Johnson, Dylan Pievac, Garrett Keillor and Shawn Farsai all played well in the loss.

Rancho Santa Margarita Celtics 50, Newport-Mesa Bruins 46: The Bruins were led by the stellar play of seventh-grade all-star Andrew McCormack, who had 21 points and 16 rebounds Teammates Taylor Wildman and Billy MacDonald combined for 19 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Saam Aresh, Kian Alisobhani and Ryan Banning all played well in the loss.

Fifth-sixth grade

The Newport-Mesa Heat won the NJB Southern California fifth- and sixth-grade title, 58-25, over Anaheim Hills in the title game on March 11.

The Heat also beat Rancho Santa Margarita, 35-15, and Tustin, 42-25, in the championship series. Heat Coach Paul Motal said he’s most proud that in multiple games, every player on the team scored a basket.

“The boys learned that basketball is a team sport and everyone plays a role in the outcome,” Motal said.

Contributing for the Heat were Chris Von Der Ahe, Cameron Davis, Blake Motal, Derek Kula, Drew Olson, Armaan Patel, Paul Nguyen, Sam Younesi and Matthew Morgan.

Third-grade championship

Pistons 22, Nuggets 21 (OT): The Pistons wrapped up the championship in a defensive-minded overtime thriller on March 13. In overtime, Jeremiah Sheldon scored the only point on a free throw, finishing with a game-high 13 points. Guard Andrew Laidlaw had nine points for the Pistons, who went 10-2, 4-0 in the playoffs.

Also contributing were Ea Olotoa, Peter Harano, Sam Springston, Jack McCasson, Shane Mitchell and Andrew English. The team was coached by Jeff Sheldon and Jeff Mitchell.
