Oilers spike competition
Coming off a rugged two days of play at the Orange County Championships, the Huntington Beach High boys’ volleyball team faced another challenging stretch last week, playing four matches in a four-day period.
The Oilers were up for the challenge, and won all four matches.
Two of those wins came during the opening week of play in the Sea View League. The other two came against cross-town and former Sunset League rivals.
On Friday, Huntington and Marina met in a nonleague match Friday that went to the host Oilers, 25-19, 24-26, 25-15, 29-27. Previously, Huntington had swept Sea View League foe Northwood in another tense match, 26-24, 25-22, 25-21. Stipe Lasic had nine kills and Alex Tonjes four kills in the win over Northwood.
In another match between city schools, Huntington edged visiting Edison in a match that went down to the wire, 25-21, 22-25, 21-25, 25-19, 15-11. Tony Ciarelli led the Oilers with 23 kills and Tonjes added eight. Carl Eberts had 14 kills for Edison.
Tonjes also had 19 kills as the Oilers won, 3-1, against Trabuco Hills in another league contest.
“I was pretty impressed,” Huntington Coach Rocky Ciarelli said of the four wins in four days.
In baseball:
Michael Rhodes hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning during Friday’s Sea View League encounter with visiting Woodbridge, and Huntington Beach went on to record a 6-0 shutout.
Edison pounded out three home runs, including two in the sixth inning, to defeat visiting Newport Harbor, 6-1, in Sunset League play Friday. Ryan Sheeks and Justin DeMarco hit solo home runs and Michael Kuehn had a two-run homer.
A late rally by Marina came up just short at Los Alamitos, as the host Griffins held on for a 7-6 Sunset League victory, also on Friday. Key hits for Marina during its late rally were doubles by Chad Lewis, Danny Pulfer and Robby Herron.
Ocean View won its two Golden West League games last week, whipping Westminster and Saddleback by identical 13-1 scores to move its league record to 5-0 heading into this week’s action.
Ocean View was clinging to a 1-0 lead before erupting for nine runs with two out and a runner on base in the top of the fifth.
“It was a close one for a while,” Ocean View Coach Shane Borowski said.
In the win over Saddleback, Baxter threw five shutout innings to earn his third win of the year,
In softball:
Huntington picked up a pair of easy victories at the Katella Tournament last week, routing Cabrillo of Long Beach, 13-0, and Segerstrom, 8-1.
In the mercy-rule win against Cabrillo, the Oilers scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning and went on to outhit the Jaguars, 12-1.
Jenny Driver, Allison Dufault (two RBIs) and Lauren Stuhr (three RBIs) each hit home runs, Kara Rutkin went three for four with three runs scored and Courtney Dial finished two for three with an RBI and a run scored.
In the 8-1 win over Segerstrom, the Oilers pounded out 14 hits. Rutkin homered and tripled twice, Amanda Horowitz homered and singled and Driver, Dufault and Stuhr each had two hits.
In lacrosse:
An explosive Huntington Beach offense overpowered Laguna Hills, 10-4, in nonleague action at the Huntington Beach Sports Complex.
Derek Rosas scored four goals and had an assist, Sam Clarke had three goals and two assists, Nick Soresi, Ryan Tully and Pat Sorino each had a goal and Louis Roupoli and Pat Lyons each had an assist.
Huntington also dropped a 14-3 game to highly-ranked El Toro. Sam Clarke led the Oilers in scoring with two goals. Nick Refice had a goal and an assist and Roupoli added an assist.
In track and field:
Huntington Beach fell in Sea View League girls’ action to Trabuco Hills, 88 1/2 -47 1/2 .
For the Oilers, Colleen Ryan won the 3,200 meters in 11 minutes 36 seconds, Bonnie Sorensen took the long jump (16 feet 10 3/4 ), Allison Korresel won the pole vault in 10 feet, Laura Boggeln captured the triple jump (37-7 1/2 ) and Jenny Pilecki was second in the 800 (2:25.1).
