If you’re a budding wine connoisseur (or just a big fan of wine), sign-up for UCI Extension wine classes, the only university-level wine study program in Orange County.

Two great teachers teach the fun and informative classes: Edward Manetta, a certified sommelier and owner of the Reserve Wine Bar and Shop in Ladera Ranch; and Peter Brown, an award-winning instructor and wine-and-food-pairing specialist. Each series is packed with valuable wine information: How to evaluate and describe wine, the differences between old and new world wines, wine and food pairing, and the invaluable — how to impress your friends with your wine knowledge. Manetta teaches Fundamentals of Wines starting April 2 to May 7 (six meetings from 7 to 10 p.m. for $290); and Brown teaches Wines of Americas starting April 5 to April 26 (four meetings from 7 to 10 p.m. for $250). In Fundamentals of Wines, you’ll learn how to understand labels, the differences in grapes, and wine regions throughout the world, and much more. You’ll taste quality California wines as well as European wines. Each class will focus on particular wines, such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

In Wines of Americas you’ll taste and discuss wines from North and South America. Brown will help you enjoy the nuances of wines, color, appearance, bouquet and aroma. At each class you’ll taste up to eight wines, including dark Argentinean Malbec, sweet Canadian Ice wine, wonderful Oregon Pinot Noir, California Cabernets, Chardonnays and more. You’ll taste two similar wines from various regions and discover the differences. Just bring two clear wine glasses to class, sit back and enjoy!
