School programs get more funds

Seven schools in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District have received funds for after-school programs, State Supt. Jack O’Connell announced Thursday.

The After-School Education and Safety grants, which went out to more than 4,000 schools, provide funds for schools to develop after-school tutoring, arts and music, physical education as well as other programs.

Priority was given to schools where at least half of students qualified for free and reduced-price meals.

Adams, Pomona, Sonora, Whittier and Wilson elementary schools each netted $112,050, while the state awarded $106,488 to College Park Elementary School and $56,700 to Rea Elementary School.
