Two Costa Mesa boys were arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and being drunk in public after they reportedly assaulted a 12-year-old boy in Eastside Costa Mesa, police said Thursday.

The 12-year-old Costa Mesa boy was walking with a group of friends near Santa Ana Avenue and Ogle Street just before 3 p.m. Wednesday when two 17-year-olds walked by, reportedly making foul-mouthed comments about a girl walking with the 12-year-old, Sgt. Marty Carver said.

One of the 17-year-old suspects — police said both were drunk — reportedly kicked the other boy and swung a beer bottle at him before the alleged victim could run away. Carver said the 12-year-old boy was not hit by the bottle and was not injured in the fray.

The boy and his friends called police and were able to identify the two 17-year-olds to police, and the pair were arrested, police said.

One of the 17-year-old suspects was released to his parents Wednesday afternoon. The one who reportedly swung the beer bottle was taken to juvenile hall, Carver said.
