BASEBALLLuke Genova had two hits and two RBIs, also striking out the side in the sixth for a save in Citrus Motors’ come-from-behind victory on March 15. Jeremiah Sheldon pitched three scoreless innings for Citrus, and Jake Genova, Chase Alibrando, Zane Waysz and Sheldon all added RBIs.

Citrus Motors 6, Sun Cal 3:

Citrus Motors 4, Al’s N.Y. Café 0: Nick Belida and Luke Genova each pitched three shutout innings for Citrus Motors, which also played strong defense, on March 17. Luke Genova, Jake Genova and Jeremiah Sheldon each collected two hits, with both Genovas driving in two runs. Belida added a double to right for Citrus (4-0).

Newport Beach Little LeaguePatrick Standel and J.B. Lee led the Cardinals in their victory over the previously undefeated Yankees on March 17. Standel was two for four with a home run, triple and four RBIs. Lee increased the Cards’ early lead with his first-inning triple which scored two, making the score 3-0.

AAA Division

Cardinals 16, Yankees 4:

In the third, Ryan Maister helped break the game open when the first of his three singles scored Jake Hastings (two for three with a walk). Ryan Kleinman doubled in that same inning, and was also two for three on the day. The third inning also tallied hits from Max Carr and Teddy Somekh. Clint Henderson doubled in the fourth inning, and Josh Anderson and Erika Lynn-Green scored for their team as a result of their combined four walks.

On the mound, Maister had five strikeouts and only gave up two hits over three innings. Standel started off strong for the Cardinals, striking out three in the first two innings.

SOCCERThe Slammers soccer team, based in Newport Beach, won the Las Vegas Showcase Tournament on March 17-18. The team defeated state champions from Indiana and Oklahoma in pool play, and defeated the state champion from Arizona, Sereno, 3-0 in the final.

Slammers win title in Las Vegas:

The team includes five boys from Newport Beach, Newport Coast and CdM: Reed Williams, Ben Capaldi, Brian Ford, Jay Levin and Chase Nugent. The team participates in the South Coast Soccer League, and next year will be competing at the Premier level for boys under 16.

AYSO Region 120Jackie Hubbard scored the go-ahead goal in the second half off Marlene Calderon’s assist, allowing Mesa to earn the win. Alondra Novoa and Alba Marie Barrios both added goals for Costa Mesa, which came from behind twice in the game. A nice pass from Gracie Diamond assisted Novoa’s goal.

Girls under 11 (APP)

Costa Mesa 3, N. Irvine 2:

Strong support from Costa Mesa defenders Amy Heil, Emily Gruber and Claudia Huerta helped them to the win. Forwards Cristina Tuer, Kayla Stephens and Jayme Krohnfeldt kept the pressure on North Irvine’s net.

AYSO Region 97The Region 97 spring select team opened the season with a win, despite playing with just nine players. Cody Peters scored four goals for Newport, which also used a goal from Matt Mello in the first two minutes of the game, assisted by Zach Buie, to start the momentum.

Boys under 14 (Spring Select)

Newport 6, N. Irvine 3:

Malcolm Faigen, Michael Shaw and goalie Michael Dominguez played great defense for Newport, while midfielders Cody Lippman and Bobby Gordan controlled the action. Tynan Yagana had four assists on offense and played strong defense for the whole fourth quarter.

Girls under 14 (Spring Select)Madison Walsh scored both Newport goals in its come-from-behind win, one goal assisted by Megan Bathen. Kylee Pochirowski, Madison Grant, Katty Ayala and Lauren Clemence played strong at the midfield positions. Carly Sorensen, Remy Pacine and Tatum Norton controlled the defense and Meaghan Kay stopped several shots in goal.

Newport United 2, N. Irvine 1:

Newport United 3, Corona del Mar 1: Holly Patrick scored three times in the first half, with assists by Miranda McFarland and Tatum Norton, as Newport raced out to a 3-0 lead. Newport’s defense was very tough throughout the match with contributions from Carly Sorensen, Remy Pacine and Lauren Clemence. Midfielders Madison Walsh, Maddie Grant and Katty Ayala controlled the center of the field.

Newport goalies Ani Harbottle and Tatum Norton played very well, and Bailey McDaniel helped keep the pressure on CdM’s defense with her play at right forward.

Girls under 12 (Spring Select)Newport broke open a scoreless game early in the second half on Nikki Walsh’s redirect of a CdM clearing attempt, which was followed by Kathryn De La Torre’s blast from the left side on combined crossing pass assists from Brenda Torres and Kendall Lindsey. Walsh scored the final goal at the end of the game.

Newport 3, Corona del Mar 0:

Newport had controlled the ball well most of the game on the midfield play of Lindsey, Christine Arechigo, Savannah Vrbas, Sara Bradbury, Gigi Light and Caroline Johnson, while Newport’s defense of Taylor Harrison, Elyssa Barnett, Jamie Darling and Bailey Riekie shut down the CdM offense.

Girls under 10The Soccer Freaks scored just after the game began, but Blue Thunder defenders Josie Miller and Alexandra Vasquez, along with goalie Briana Picquelle, sealed off the goal fr the rest of the quarter. Second quarter action included a breakaway by Blue Thunder forward Emily Fay, who was denied on a nice save by the Soccer Freaks’ goalie. The Knights of Blue Thunder came together in the third quarter, with Isbella Islava and Emily Garcia scoring goals, both on assists by Vanessa Fleming. In the fourth quarter, Blue Thunder forwards Megan Mirabal and Stephanie Lazo showed great teamwork and ball control. Midfielder Daniela Vazquez also cleared the ball nicely to the Blue Thunder forwards.
