COSTA MESA CITY COUNCIL PREVIEW
Here are some items the council will consider Tuesday.
PARK PLANSThe council hasn’t decided what to do with the 1.19-acre parcel on Monte Vista Avenue the city just acquired, but the city manager’s office is asking for money to clear the site.
In March the city closed a deal to buy the property for $3.5 million, after a private school there closed in 2006.
The parcel is next to 1.45-acre Brentwood Park. Now that Costa Mesa owns it, some city officials have suggested putting a community center there.
Before anything is built, however, the existing buildings — which contain mold, asbestos and lead-based paint — must be razed.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The council probably will vote to spend up to $300,000 to remove the buildings at 261 Monte Vista Ave.
TOLL ROAD BILLNewport Beach City Council deferred taking a position on the completion of the Foothill-Eastern Toll Road, which has environmentalists riled because its southern extension would cut through San Onofre State Park. Costa Mesa officials now will take up the issue.
They’ve been asked by the Transportation Corridor Agencies, which control the toll roads, to oppose a state bill that would bar new roads or other construction in or near state parks. The council also will decide whether to sign a letter of support for the Orange County Water District’s groundwater replenishment system, which is somewhat less controversial and doesn’t have formal opposition.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Council members may support the water project, but it’s not clear if they’ll want to get involved in the south county toll road debate.
