Newport Surf Classic held

Pat Towersey won the men’s open event and Devyn Hartnett captured the women’s open to highlight more than 100 competitors who took part in the eight annual Newport Classic surf contest, Saturday and Sunday at 56th Street in Newport Beach.

The event, a fundraiser for the Newport Harbor High surf team, awarded champions in seven divisions.

Reagan Riley topped the field in the high school division, while Blake Davis won the middle school division.

Charlie Waite won the longboard division, while Yuji Kanbayashi was the bodyboard division champion.

Thom McElroy won the masters division, for competitors age 40 and older.

The men’s open and longboard division featured the closest margin of victory.

Towersey’s score of 6.1 edged Josh Hoyer (6.0) in the men’s event.

Matt Armstrong (7.3) was runner-up to Waite (7.5) in the longboard divisions.

Other runners-up included: Amy Lowry (women’s); Matt Contreras (high school); Fitz Howser (middle school); Joe Suzuki (bodyboard); and Eddie Flore(masters).

Will Anderson (men’s), Karen Helm (women’s), Cameron Clark (high school), Zach Morabito (middle school), Chris LoMenzo (longboard), Matt Kretschmar (bodyboard) and Andy Grossman (masters) finished third in their respective divisions.

Saturday’s competition, in small surf, featured 12 preliminary and semifinal heats. Sunday, contested in overhead sets, featured 15 heats.

Awards were presented to the top six finishers in each division.

Longboard -- 4. Andy Delorme; 5. Michael Maddox; 6. Amy Lowry.

Bodyboard -- 4. Joe Riggio; 5. Dillon Sukecki; 6. Steve Jensen.

Masters -- 4. Lyle Davis; 5. Doug Fresh; 6. Jeff Heimstaedt.
