WET AND WILD WITH ROCKIN’ FIG:Tsunami aftermath filmed by surfer

I just saw my buddy Timmy Turner the other day at the shop, and he was looking pretty darned good. You may remember he picked up a major staph infection and gave us quite a scare when he was hospitalized for a few months in early 2006. Besides being a hot surfer, he’s also a killer filmmaker. His movie “Second Thoughts” won Surfer Magazine’s best movie award. It was about an Indonesian trip where Timmy, Brett Swartz and Travis Potter live in the jungle on a desolate islandfor a month.

Timmy’s been at it again, this time with “Tsunami Diaries.” The film documents the destruction in Indonesia when the big earthquake hit and the tidal wave followed. The Turners went on a mission with some doctors and friends to help out, getting medical supplies, food and other donations there. Their effort had a great impact on the people who have been so good to them over the years.

So these experiences have been put together, and the premiere of this movie is going to be shown at the Huntington Beach High School Auditorium Theater April 10. The price of admission is $10, which includes free raffle tickets for a drawing of Quiksilver gear, Surf Prescription surfboard, wetsuits and many more giveaways. A percentage of the proceeds is also going to the Indonesia relief fund. There’s going to be a question-and-answer period with Timmy and his mom, Michelle, who owns the Sugar Shack restaurant downtown. Joining them will be Kristian McCue, who helped film edit and direct the movie; Bill Sharp, who went there to distribute supplies; magazine writer Matt George; and brother Ryan.

A clip of Timmy’s new movie, “Cold Thoughts,” will also be shown. The movie features Alaska, cold surf and wild bears roaming the wilderness, and some Vancouver Island shots, too. He also plans on heading to Ireland and Norway. Doctors say no tropical spots for Turner for at least year or so.

The April 10 screening will also feature a clip from “Chasing the Dream,” the Huntington Beach High School Surf team’s trip to Australia, which was sponsored by Quiksilver. Coach Andy Verdone’s top-gun crew of surfers — Quinn McCrystal, Kyle Kennelly, Logan Strook, A.J. Collins, Taylor Pai, Dru Snyder, Eric Ramsey and Matt Mohagen — rip it up at a bunch of different breaks in Oz. The tickets will be available at the Sugar Shack on Main Street, starting this week.

You’re not going to want to miss this one!

Fig, over and out.
