CITYSCAPE FOCUS:Abundance of activities
This year holidays from two major religions overlap, as Holy Week for Western Christianity and Passover continue throughout the week. And Eastern Orthodox churches, which use a different calendar, will also celebrate Easter this Sunday, an uncommon occurrence.
While the highlight of Jewish Passover celebrations, Seder ceremonies on the first nights of the holiday, have passed, the Christian holidays are yet to culminate on Easter Sunday.
Americans celebrate Easter in numerous ways, sacred and secular. Here are some of the notable options in Huntington Beach:
Kids looking to track down eggs early can go to Central Park at 10 a.m. Saturday, where City of Huntington Beach Community Services and the Huntington Beach Kiwanis Club are holding their annual free Easter egg hunt.
The event includes prizes, game booths, and entertainment, and is intended for children 9 years old and younger. The festivities start next to the Breakfast in the Park restaurant, 6622 Lakeview Drive. For more information, call (714) 536-5486.
Churches throughout the city are holding services, but some are moving to special locations for a well-attended day.
Seabreeze Church is holding a single outdoor service and other celebrations at the Huntington Beach High School stadium, 1905 Main St. Kids arriving at 10 a.m. will have bounce houses, face painting and an egg hunt to enjoy, while services begin at 10:30 a.m. Free parking, Starbucks coffee and Krispy Kreme doughnuts for all attendees.
St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Presbyterian Church is holding its services next to the ocean, with sunrise worship at 6 a.m. at Bolsa Chica State Beach, 17931 Pacific Coast Highway. Those who go are asked to bring a chair or a blanket. For more information, call (714) 846-6641.
A number of restaurants are celebrating another Easter tradition, the family brunch. There will be an all-you-can-eat buffet and champagne breakfast from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Old World Restaurant, 7561 Center Ave. For more information and reservations, call (714) 895-8020.
Chimayo at the Beach, 315 Pacific Coast Highway, is having a three-course brunch starting at 10 a.m., as well as serving a la carte entrees. For more information, call (714) 374-7273.
Duke’s Huntington Beach, 317 Pacific Coast Highway, will also have an Easter brunch, with buffet including eggs Benedict, French toast, beef and ham carving station and more. For more information call (714) 374-6446.
