Mustangs go deep on Estancia

COSTA MESA — The most competitive event came at the conclusion of the Costa Mesa High-Estancia dual meet Thursday.

There were four lead changes throughout the boys’ 1,600-meter relay. Costa Mesa’s Antwon Byrd took back the lead for the Mustangs on the second leg before Estancia’s Ryan Whites gave the Eagles the upper hand with 400 meters to go.

Unfortunately for Estancia, it had to maintain that lead over Costa Mesa senior Asa Hawks, who had won the 400 with ease earlier in the day. Eagles Coach Charlie Appell sent his team racing around the track to cheer the foursome to victory, but Hawks blew into the lead, prodding anyone in green and white to cheer him on, and Costa Mesa won the race by two seconds.

The final score, however, was long since decided as the Mustangs boys won, 70-57, as did the girls, 100-19, in the Orange Coast League contest between the cross-town rivals at Orange Coast College.

Costa Mesa’s depth played a large role in both victories. Whites, an Estancia senior, was the only triple winner on the day but in each event he won the Mustangs finished second and third to offset his victory.

The Mustangs also got a hand from softball player Danielle Morton. Prior to Costa Mesa’s home game against Laguna Beach, the shortstop managed to pick up victories in the long jump (15 feet, 8 inches) and the triple jump (33-5 1/2 ).

“That means a lot to us,” Costa Mesa Coach Diane Bjelland said.

Arlene Sanchez was also a double winner for the Mustangs, taking the 3,200 (13:14.6), the 800 (2:37.7) and finishing second in the 1,600 (5:47.9), with personal bests in the latter two events.

“It’s about eating right and being mentally prepared,” said Sanchez, who eats peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and bananas before meets. “I thought Estancia brought great competition. I thought they might take us. My coaches tell me not to worry, just look at my time. By the last lap [in the 3,200] I picked it up. She sounded a bit tired.”

On the boys’ side, Whites had the biggest day, winning the 110 hurdles (15.9), the 300 hurdles (42.6) and the triple jump (38). Whites, who was the Golden West League champion in both hurdles last year, said he is still a couple seconds off his ideal time.

“I’ve done better,” Whites said. “The problem I have is that I’m a little out of shape. I have to do a lot of speed work. I’m feeling pretty confident. I just set goals for what I want to get. Today I just wanted to win.”

Hawks, the defending league champion in the 200, won both the 200 (23.0) and 400 (52.3).

“I did all right, because it’s windy out here it kills your throat. My throat is pretty dry, I need to get some water,” Hawks said after winning the 200. “I can win the 200 again if I keep going hard in practice. I do the best I can. Hopefully I can place in the 400.”

Costa Mesa’s Cody De La Mater won both the shot put (37-8) and discus (100-9).

Estancia’s Wes Barloon was representative of the Eagles dominance in the middle- and long-distance events. Estancia took eight of the top nine places in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.

“It’s nice to know your teammates are right there with you,” said Barloon who won the 3,200 (10:41) and finished second in the 1,600 (4:50.9). “I think I did pretty good. I’m happy, but I think I can go faster.”

The dual meet was the league opener for Estancia and Costa Mesa, with both still having to face Calvary Chapel and Laguna Beach.
