BASEBALL

Corona del Mar 1, Irvine 0IRVINE — Pitcher Vinnie St. John threw a four-hitter with five strikeouts and one walk in his complete-game shutout to lead the Sea Kings to the Pacific Coast League win Thursday.

Jake Lemmerman had a double and later scored on a throwing error after Austin Elliott put the ball in play in the third inning to help Corona del Mar improve to 10-3, 5-1 in league. Irvine dropped to 2-11, 1-5.

Lemmerman’s double was one of four hits for Corona del Mar.

The Sea Kings play host to Chino Hills in the opening round of the Beach Pit Classic Saturday at 11 a.m.

Esperanza 13, Newport Harbor 2NEWPORT BEACH — Brett Houten went two for three with a double in the Sunset League game Thursday, but the Sailors couldn’t keep up with Esperanza, ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division I.

The Sailors (3-10, 1-6 in league) play host to Northwood Saturday at 11 a.m. to open the Beach Pit Classic.

Corona del Mar def. IrvineCORONA DEL MAR — Blaine Nielsen recorded a match-high 14 kills to go with seven digs, helping lead the Sea Kings to the 25-11, 25-15, 25-17 Pacific Coast League win Thursday.

Jeff Carlson added seven kills, six digs and two blocks, Gus Ellis six kills, Brad McCoy five kills and Dylan Davis three kills for Corona del Mar (20-1, 4-0 in league), ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division II.

Phil Bannan contributed 26 assists and Sam Stafford had 13 assists.

Corona del Mar has the week off for Spring Break and returns to play at University on April 17 at 5:30 p.m.

Esperanza def. Newport HarborANAHEIM — Kyle Caldwell had a team-high eight kills for the Sailors in a 25-16, 25-17, 25-21 Sunset League loss to the Aztecs on Thursday at Esperanza High.

Max Volz and Weston Dunlap each had five kills for Newport Harbor (11-9, 2-2 in league), which was swept by Esperanza (18-4, 4-0) for the second time in three days.

Chad Stassel added four digs.

Newport Harbor plays Marina on April 18 at Golden West College.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 14, Irvine 4IRVINE — Freshman Ryan Peyton swept at No. 1 singles and junior Brent Pham also had three wins at No. 2 in the Sea Kings’ Pacific Coast League win Thursday.

CdM’s No. 1 and 2 doubles teams, Parker Rhodes-Chris Damion and Charlie Corum-Hootan Mehr also swept.

The Sea Kings (13-1, 4-0 in league), ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division I, plays at Beckman on April 17.

Estancia 197, Calvary Chapel 207FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Ryan Knapp shot even-par 36 to earn medalist honors and lead Estancia to the Orange Coast League win at Miles Square Golf Club Thursday.

Pat Flannery (38), Storm Hagen (40), Andrew Ayala (41), Drew Bertoni (42) also contributed for the Eagles (12-3, 8-0 in league), who will compete in the La Quinta Tournament April 13-14 at the Golf Club at Terra Lago in Indio.

Esperanza 196,YORBA LINDA — The Sailors’ Andrew Skjonsby and Bryce Greeley shared the medalist honor with one-over-par 36s in the Sunset League match at Yorba Linda Country Club Thursday.

Newport Harbor 197

Steve Stoneman (38), Justin Morehead (43) and Chase Behr (44) also scored for Newport Harbor (10-5, 4-1 in league).

The outcome was decided on the final hole, Sailors Coach Scott Tarnow said. Two Newport Harbor golfers each had 10- to 12-foot putts for birdie, but settled for par. Meanwhile, one Esperanza golfer made a five-foot putt for par and another sank a 30-foot putt for birdie to help the Aztecs produce their lowest score of the season, nine strokes better than their previous best.

The Sailors will compete in the Palm Springs Tournament Monday and Tuesday at the Cimarron Golf Resort in Cathedral City.

TRACK AND FIELD

Irvine 65, Corona del Mar 60Corona del Mar 91, Irvine 36CORONA DEL MAR — Tiffany Liu won three events as the Sea King girls were winners in all but three events in the Pacific Coast League meet Thursday.

Liu grabbed first place in the 100-meter hurdles (16.2 seconds), the long jump (16 feet, 10 1/2 inches) and the triple jump (35-2 1/2 ).

Claire Schmidt (200 and 400), Shelby Buckley (800, 1,600), and Ann Klunder (shot put, discus) won two events each, while Sarah Cummings won the 3,200 meters for the CdM girls (6-0, 3-0 in league).

On the boys’ side, Brett Granger, Tommy Hutchison and Thomas Dialynas won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200, respectively for the Sea Kings (3-3, 0-3). Spencer Aguilar won the high jump (5 feet, 8 inches).

A handful of Corona del Mar athlete will compete in the Arcadia Invitational on Saturday.

Corona del Mar dropped to 6-7, 4-2 in league, while the Vaqueros improved to 7-11, 2-4.

The Sea Kings return to action in the Woodbridge Tournament, which starts Saturday and is also played Monday and April 14.
