MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UCLA def. UC IrvineWESTWOOD — Jayson Jablonsky recorded a match-high 19 kills, but the No. 2-ranked Anteaters lost the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Friday night in front of 1,143 at Pauley Pavilion.

Steve Klosterman and Paul George had 17 kills each to lead the No. 4-ranked Bruins to their 23-30, 24-30, 30-28, 30-28, 17-15 victory.

Taylor Wilson added 17 kills, Matt Webber spiked 14 kills, while David Smith and Aaron Harrell had 12 kills each for UCI (22-5, 15-5 in conference). Anteaters setter Brian Thornton amassed 64 assists. UCLA improved to 17-10, 11-9.

Irvine Valley def. Orange CoastIRVINE — Kevin Welch had 20 kills for the Pirates in the Pacific Coast Conference match that the Lasers won, 27-30, 30-22, 30-20, 25-30, 15-11 Friday night.

Matt Knutson tallied 13 kills, while Neil Bell had 11 kills for Orange Coast (14-3, 8-2 in conference). Trevor Holmes had seven blocks and Alika DeRego 12 digs for the Pirates. Peter Johnson led Irvine Valley (12-3, 7-2) with 24 kills.

TRACK AND FIELD

Big West Challenge CupSANTA BARBARA — UC Irvine senior Ricky Barnes was a double winner, finishing first in the 800 meters in 1 minute, 52.90 seconds and the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:47.39.

The Anteaters’ Jon Wratten took first in the high jump at 6 feet, 8 3/4 inches and Mike Navarro won the long jump with a mark of 22-0 1/4 . Navarro placed second in the triple jump at 45-1 while Napoleon Greene earned second-place finishes in the 110 hurdles (15.58) and the 400 hurdles (52.76).

The UCI men’s team finished fourth in the competition with 146 points as host UC Santa Barbara claimed first with 189 points.

In women’s competition, UCI sophomore Lauren Collins won the high jump at 5-5 and she finished second in the 100 hurdles (14.67).

Natasha Wardley finished third in the triple jump at 38-2 for the No. 7 mark in UCI history.The UCI women finished fourth with 118 points as UCSB won the meet with 210 points.

Coast Open ClassicCOSTA MESA — Keneti Faagata, Brandon Babiracki and Jesse Ramirez were among those who won for the Orange Coast College men Friday at OCC.

Faagata won the shot put with a mark of 46 feet, 7 1/2 inches. Babiracki won the 1,500 emters in 3 minutes, 54.88 seconds and Jesse Ramirez prevailed in the 800 in 1:56.86. Giovanni Lanaro cleared 18-4 1/2 to win the pole vault.

On the women’s side, Brittany Ickes won the javelin for OCC with a throw of 112-10 1/2 . Hester Chang, who placed third in the javelin (86-5), also finished fourth in the hammer throw (130-7) and fifth in the shot put (30-5 1/4 ).

Brenda Finney was the lone high jumper to clear 5-0 to win the event for OCC.

In the 3,000 steeplechase, Melinda Rackliffe (12:38.77) and Claire Fleming (13:13.38) finished 1-2 respectively, while pole vaulter Jade Leblanc cleared 10-6 for a first-place mark.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Stanford 10, UC Irvine 3IRVINE — Gianna Rossi, Jessica Lewis and Jackie Prine each scored one goal for the No. 4-ranked Anteaters in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match against the top-ranked Cardinal Friday.

Lauren Machanis had six saves for UCI (15-7, 3-5 in conference).
