OCC’s student newspaper honored

The Coast Report, Orange Coast College’s student newspaper, has won the Journalism Assn. of Community Colleges’ General Excellence Award for the second year in a row.

Six hundred delegates, representing colleges throughout California and Arizona, chose the Coast Report at their annual convention in Sacramento in late March. OCC shared the award with several other colleges.

A number of Coast Report staffers won individual awards, with editor Josh Aden taking fourth place in front page design, Ed Carrasco earning an honorable mention for feature writing, Kristal Seeden doing the same for magazine feature writing and Cameron Reed winning second place in opinion writing.

“This is a huge honor,” said Coast Report advisor Cathy Werblin, a former writer for the Los Angeles Times and Orange County Register, in a release.

Crystal Cove to hold volunteer training

Crystal Cove State Park is looking for volunteers to work at the visitor center and the interpretative store in its historic district next month.

Volunteers are needed on a regular basis. The visitor center and store are open seven days a week.

The store needs volunteers to work in the mornings and afternoons all week and in the evenings on the weekend.

A training session will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. May 9 at the office at Los Trancos.

Costa Mesa’s Fairview Park Friends Committee will host a wildflower walk on April 14 at Fairview Park. Sarah Jayne, of the Orange County chapter of the California Native Plant Society, will describe the flora and habitat on the walk.
