Costa Mesa NationalPhillies 7, Brewers 6: Frank DiPietro’s two-out, bases-loaded double drove in two runs in the bottom of the sixth, lifting the Phillies to the dramatic win on March 28.

Little League

Majors division

The Phillies had loaded the bases on a walk, error and two-out single by Nathan Frank, setting up DiPietro’s hard line drive past the left fielder. The Brewers had rallied from a 5-1 deficit with a four-run fourth — led by Jesse Paz’s two-run home run — and took a 6-5 lead in the top of the fifth when Tyler Rios doubled and scored on an error.

Ben Beck helped the Phillies to the early lead with a third-inning grand slam. Matt Jarmacz followed with a double and scored on an error.

Jarmacz, the Phillies’ starting pitcher, gave up two hits and three runs and struck out five in three innings. Dante Capoccia closed the game for the Phillies, giving up just one hit and striking out seven.

Phillies 12, Marlins 6: Dante Capoccia went three for four with a double for the Phillies on March 22. Ben Beck, Matt Jarmacz and Eric Rasmussen each had two hits. Matt Thomas, Brandon Arceyut and Nathan Frank each added hits, and Thomas scored four runs.

Jarmacz had six strikeouts for the Phillies. Capoccia didn’t allow a hit in two innings and struck out five. Playing catcher, he also caught a runner stealing. Rasmussen made a nice catch in left field, Arceyut caught an infield fly and Garrett Deutsch made a good play on a ground ball at second.

Farm DivisionPirates vs. Padres: The team ball was awarded to the Padres’ Carter Fenley on March 24. Fenley made several impressive plays, including a nice stop at second base followed by a tag for an out. He also had a hit through the infield to advance the runners.

Padres vs. Phillies: Ryan Harrison drove in two runs with a triple to deep right to lead the Padres. Drake Siegel drove in a run with a triple to the center-field fence.

Kyle Fitzgerald hit a two-run double to center and Carter Fenley added an RBI double. Connor Hamm and Travis Hastings had consistent at-bats to advance runners.

In the field, third baseman Nicholas Loveland caught a pop up. Pitcher Tristin Ospina scooped up a grounder and tagged the runner heading to first. Mathew Ingram made a great stop in right field and threw to first and retired the batter. Charlie Godshall and Hastings also contributed on several plays for the Padres.

The team ball was awarded to Bradley Siegel, who went three for three with two triples, a double and two RBIs.

T-Ball Division

Astros vs. Reds: The Astros played another terrific game on March 31. Hunter DesPrez made a sparkling catch of a hard-hit line drive. Andrew Testa also displayed incredible defensive abilities, and Justin Wood hit the ball well and ran fast around the bases. Natalie Hutchinson, Cassidy Harrison and Luke Hutchinson each had a hit. Jack Strickland and Andrew Camargo each had hits and made tough plays look easy on defense.

Cardinals vs. Reds: Jeremy Gardner smashed the ball down the third-base line for a two-run double for the Reds. Katelyn Chesemore had three solid hits to the outfield and drove in three runs. Hayden Pearce and Jake Lord had consistent at-bats to advance runners.

The Reds’ defense was also solid. First baseman Trevor Pacheco stopped a solid hit and got the out, and shortstop Jesse Estrada caught a bouncing grounder and threw to catcher Katie Fitzgerald, who tagged the runner for an out. Connor Walsh caught every throw at first base. Catcher Cameron Hamm tagged out two runners at home, and Nathan Pacheco caught a solid hit at shortstop to keep the runners form advancing.

Dylan Delaney, who went three for three with three RBIs, was awarded the team ball.

Newport Beach Little LeaguePadres 4, Cardinals 0: Pitcher Nathan Brown threw a two-hit shutout, lifting the Padres on April 2.

Majors Division

The first inning rally started with an infield single by Chad Redfearn. Alec Tenebaum and Brown had back-to-back singles. Will Fortier hit a single to drive the first run in, then Blake Schneekluth singled up the middle to bring Redfearn home. Scoring in the fourth inning started when Tenebaum walked, Brown doubled, and Fortier singled to drive in the two runs.

Error-free defense was also key for the Padres. Highlights were plays by Chris Weinberger, who stopped a sizzling grounder at second, Cole Redfearn, who backhanded a difficult ball at first, and Grant Brown, who played consistently at shortstop. Other Padres contributing to the win were Erik Ctvrtlik, Branden Varner, and Jason Vogel.

Manager Bart Conroy’s Cardinals team also had solid pitching by starter Paddy Conroy and relief pitcher Zak Davis. Ryan Griffin and Chris Vonderhae pounded singles to spark the Cardinals offensive bid.

SOCCER

AYSO Region 97Newport Breakers 2, South Irvine 1: The Breakers retained their first-place status after a hard-fought game. They scored first, as Delaney McCardle hammered the ball into the goal off a great cross by Kirsten Rohan.

Girls under 12

Spring Select Gold Division

(Games played March 31)

Irvine scored next to tie the game right before the half. In the third quarter, Brinley Siemonsma scored for Newport on a breakaway after a near-miss on a similar play just minutes earlier. Both teams were evenly matched, but Newport’s defense, consisting of Hannan Roman, Mollie Friend, Alex Steiner and goalie Layne More, was relentless.

Forwards Madison Mastera, Sarah Daly and Hannah Nance got some shots on goal but Irvine’s goalie was solid and had many saves.

Taury Hlinka, Katherine Maddox and Paige Tennison played tough for Newport. They controlled the ball at the midfield and were instrumental in many of Newport’s scoring attacks.

Girls under 12 recreational

Wahinis vs. Blue Devils: Brenda Luna scored for the Wahinis with a big boot from almost midfield at the end of the first quarter. The Blue Devils tied the score just before half. Page Keys took an assist from Mckenna Johnson to dribble around two defenders for the Wahinis’ go-ahead goal in the third quarter.

Carly Christian tapped in the insurance goal with an assist from Page Keys. Kathryn Snell, Julia Frum and Julie Frei were amazing on defense and had a great game. Samantha Sanchez had three blocked shots-on-goal in the second half.

Boys under 6Silver Sharks vs. Purple Firebirds: Elliot Harrington and Tyler Lowell were standouts defensively for the Sharks and kept the ball in the offensive end most of the game. Arden Ozdere played great in the midfield with the help of strong play from Julian Hernandez.

Mark Sanchez scored a great goal and saved one defensively and Zach Minyard had a goal saved off of the line.

Girls under 12 (APP)

(Games played March 24)

Newport Breakers 1, Tustin 0: Madison Mastera scored the only goal on an assist from Hannah Nance in the first half. However, there were many near-misses by Newport’s Katherine Maddox, Sarah Daly, Kelsey Long, Paige Tennison, Brinley Siemonsma and Taury Hlinka. Newport defenders Mollie Friend, Alex Steiner, Hannah Roman and Kirsten Rohan, along with goalie Layne More, secured the shutout.

Girls under 12Waimea Wahinis vs. Breakers: Page Keys, McKenna Johnson and Carly Christian paced the Wahinis with two goals each. Julia Frei scored her first goal of the season. Jenna Frum, Samantha Sanchez and Katheryn Snell had stellar performances all game long for the Wahinis, while Brenda Luna, Nicole Franco and Ashley Boyajian kept the ball out of the net on defense and had big assists.

Boys under 10Dominators vs. Green Warriors: The Dominators played tenacious defense, led by midfielder Mike Villani and defenders Reef McCoy and Micah Adelsohn. The Dominators’ aggressive offense was also unrelenting, with five goals scored by Riley Brockman.

Other goals were scored by striker Ryan Balkey and midfielder Devon Patterson, with assists from Iggy Nieves and Mikey Ischinger.

Girls under 8Surfer Girls vs. Pink Panthers: The Surfer Girls’ offensive attack featured constant pressure from Holly Nance, Heather Roberts, Sydney Palmer, Olivia Kalatschan and Clara Eddy. Defensively, the Surfer Girls protected their territory with solid play by Marissa Rosales, Andie Lee, Priscilla Ocampo, Teddie Hart and Taylor Sharman.

Tidal Waves vs. Dominators: Lauren Henke, Destry Comp, and Emma Hammond played strong defense for the Tidal Waves as they took on the impressive Dominators. Julia Ackerman and Vanessa Crandall scored with midfield support from Isabella Morris, Maile Raventos and Hannah Alderson. Melissa Taylor made some key steals and Brianna Smith used good positioning to move the ball into scoring position.

AYSO Region 120The Costa Mesa Crush girls’ soccer team, coached by John Rubright and Jorge Paplos, won the Red Mountain AYSO tournament in Mesa, Ariz. on March 24.

Girls under 14

The Crush allowed just one goal in the four games, as Emily Saia and Shayanne Usman stood out as goalies. Amanda Wisniewski, Shaylen McNulty, Jessica Lyons, Crystal Rubright and Alex Krohnfeldt formed a strong defense. Sami Feinstein, Lei Hookano, Rebecca Ross, Alissa Scheafer and Tiffany Le stacked the midfield and Kyarah Paplos, Cindy Rubio and Chelsie Delameter were strong forwards.

Game scores of 5-0, 2-0, 1-1 and 7-0 were impressive for Costa Mesa. Saia scored one of the goals in the last game, playing up at forward.

Girls under 12Costa Mesa 0, Tustin 0: The unbeaten girls’ under-11 APP team from Costa Mesa, playing in the Spring Select girls’ under 12 division, battled Tustin to a scoreless tie on March 31.

Spring Select

The game featured creative midfield play, constant offensive pressure and bend-but-don’t-break defensive play. Costa Mesa girls included Albamaria Barrios, Anna Vivanco, Claudia Huerta, Cristina Tuer, Jayme Krohnfeldt, Jacqeline Hubbard, Emily Grady, Emily Gruber, Kayla Stephens, Gracie Dimond, Jessica Prather, Marlene Calderon, Alondra Novoa, Jackie Tanner and Amy Heil.

Costa Mesa 1, South Irvine 0: Defender Claudia Huerta scored the winning goal with two minutes left in the game on March 24.

AYSO Region 57Corona del Mar Blue Angels 4, Costa Mesa 0: The Blue Angels continued their strong start with a shutout over Costa Mesa on March 17. Leading the scoring for the Blue Angels, Elin Wolker scored two amazing goals on drives from midfield. Mackenzie Morsey and Katherine Hess each put one in at forward. Brenna Currey and Ella Mcfadin made the assists. A strong defense led by Lauren Kobayashi, Abigail Klein, and Courtney Johnston kept Costa Mesa away from the net.

Girls under 10

Spring Select

Emily Taxman, Heidi Ritner, Anneliese Johansson, and Ally Hadfield, kept the pressure on Mesa. Aggressive goaltending and defensive play from Paige Nelson sealed the win.

Girls under 7Pink Panthers vs. Green Leprechauns: The Pink Panthers continued their winning ways on March 24, with goals by Kelly Kobayashi, Brooke Kenerson, and Kendall Dewey. Hannah Hopkins helped hold the Leprechauns scoreless with her goalie play. Asha Cooper and Emily Cannon both had a strong game on defense, while Skyler Knitowski and Blakely Beauchamp kept up the offensive pressure at midfield. The Leprechauns are a fast, athletic team, and the Pink Panthers were fortunate to hold them scoreless.

Pink Panthers vs. Four Leaf Clovers: The Pink Panthers had an exciting win on March 17, led by goal-scorers Brooke Kenerson and Skylar Knitowski. Alexandra Morin, Asha Cooper and Heather Gill kept the Clovers at bay on defense. Working the field at the midfield and forward positions were Blakely Beauchamp, Emily Canon and Hannah Hopkins. Kendall Dewey and Kelly Kobayashi provided strong goalkeeper play.

BASKETBALL

Newport-MesaThe Newport-Mesa seventh-grade girls’ basketball all-stars recently poste a combined 5-2 record in the NJB regional tournament and sectional tournament.

Seventh-grade girls

In the regional tournament, the team earned a share of first place with a 3-1 record. Strong defense and rebounding, combined with a team-oriented offense, highlighted the squad’s performance. Forwards Samantha Coffman, Annalise Morgan and Taylor Stefano did great work on the boards, while strong and unselfish play from point guards Shanay Fisher, Asia Andry, and Allie Brahs helped to create many steals and fast- break opportunities that put all 10 Newport-Mesa players into the scoring stats.

Niki Zak, Maddie Camarillo, Lottie Martin and Sara Silverman each contributed scoring, defense, and rebounding to the very balanced team effort. The team enjoyed victories over Irvine, Capo, and Villa Park and lost a tight game to the Long Beach All-Stars.

Advancing to the sectional tournament, held March 31 at Fallbrook, the team went 2-1, with wins over Capo Valley/Dana Hills and Rancho Santa Margarita. The wins offset a loss to host Fallbrook. Newport-Mesa finished second in the sectional.

Rob Morgan and Joe Stefano coached the team.
