School board selects state board candidate

The Laguna Beach Unified School District Board of Education held a special meeting yesterday, April 5, to choose their candidate for the California School Boards Association.

Region 15, which encompasses Orange County and the Lowell Joint Unified School District, held its delegate assembly election recently but one election resulted in a tie, which requires a run-off election.

The assembly sets the general policy direction for the association, and is divided into regions to ensure the interests of all districts are reflected.

Following the meeting, the Board began its interviews for a new district superintendent.

National Boys & Girls Clubs Week marked

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Laguna Beach joined more than 4,000 other clubs across the country in celebrating National Boys & Girls Club Week, March 25 to 31.

This year, the Clubs’ week-long celebration was kicked off with a sleep-over party. TLC and Main Branch members designed and printed their own t-shirts to show off their club spirit and originality.

Expressions included “The Club is Fun,” “The Art Room Rocks,” “Join the Club,” and recreations of the Clubs’ interlocking hands logo. They wore their shirts the following day.

The fun went on for the rest of the Boys & Girls Club Week at the Main Branch, including games and tournaments, the ever popular “Bunkerball” in the gym, Edible Explosions (science experiments in the Technology Center) and Dance Dance Revolution in the Cove Teen Center.

At the TLC Branch, kids continued the celebration with karaoke, a bubble party, planting flowers and tie-dying their own t-shirts.

Host families sought for international students

STS Foundation is seeking host families for international exchange high school students during the 2007-08 school year.

These students will integrate themselves into a Laguna Beach-area family with the goal of experiencing American culture as an American high school student does. In turn, they will provide insight into their own culture.

Students this year include Piotr, a 15-year-old from Poland plays on a soccer team and enjoys practicing the guitar; he also likes to study history. Joanna, a 16-year-old from Finland, enjoys dancing, surfing and horseback riding.

The host family provides a separate bed, family meals and a safe environment.

For more information on being a host family, call Sean at (800) 522-4678, e-mail seant@stsfoundation.org or visit www.stsfoundation.org.
