Track opener is near sweep

It was a near sweep for the Laguna Beach High track and field program in its Orange Coast League opener.

Taking on visiting Calvary Chapel in its final meet before spring break, the Breakers won at every level except junior varsity boys on April 5.

Laguna’s boys’ and girls’ varsity squads defeated the Eagles by identical, 74-48 scores.

“Without question, Calvary is a much improved program and they competed with us in all events,” Laguna Coach Dave Brobeck said. “A year ago this was not the case. They are well coached, organized and can be a team to really look out for in the future.

“However, as it turned out with us, our team had too much depth and experience to be beaten. Both the boys and girls varsity squads are equally balanced with talent in each event area. I think we stand an excellent chance of winning league titles.”

The Calvary Chapel meet was just the second dual of the season for Laguna. In fact, the Breakers are on two-week hiatus from competition and won’t run again until Thursday when they host Estancia at 3 p.m. at Guyer Field.

“Next week’s meet versus Estancia should be a good test for us at home,” Brobeck said. “However, it appears that our greatest league competition will be against Costa Mesa down the road in a few weeks. This program is larger than ours and is well-coached and organized.”

Following Thursday’s dual against Estancia, Laguna will run at the OC Invitational on April 21. The Breakers then will face Costa Mesa on the Mustangs’ track on April 25, their final dual of the season.

Orange Coast League prelims are April 30 at Orange Coast College. League finals are May 3, also at Orange Coast College.

Qualifiers from the league meet will advance to the CIF-Southern Section prelims on May 12. The CIF-SS finals are May 19 followed by the Southern Section Masters Meet on May 25 and the State championships June 1-2.
