COLLEGE ROUNDUP:Collins establishes school record in heptathlon

AZUSA — UC Irvine sophomore Lauren Collins set a school record with a total of 5,446 points in the Mt. SAC Relays Heptathlon, which concluded Thursday at Azusa Pacific.

Collins broke the record set by the Anteaters’ Karin Grelsson, who totaled 5,367 points in 1987. Colins’ previous best was 5,227 points, set earlier this season at the Cal State Northridge Spring Break Open.

Her marks Thursday were 18 feet, 5 inches in the long jump, 123-3 in the javelin throw and 2 minutes, 18.89 seconds in the 800 meters.

Collins finished third in the competition. Defending NCAA champion Jacquelyn Johnson, of Arizona State, was first with 5,681 points.

MEN’S TENNIS

Orange Coast 5, Cerritos 4CERRITOS — Pat Lam and Charlie Nguyen won at No. 2 doubles to clinch the Pirates’ nonconference match Thursday that could prove crucial for an at-large playoff berth Thursday.

OCC No. 1 singles player Jon Kroopf battled back to win, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, over Jeff Zachirajongkol, for a key win. Also, Kevin Kordestani won, 7-6, 7-5, at No. 6 singles for the Pirates (12-4).

“We were up 4-2 after singles, but we knew their doubles was their strength so I still didn’t feel comfortable,” OCC Coach Jeff Thomsen said. “But Pat Lam and Charlie Nguyen came up and played unbelievable doubles to clinch it for us. Jon was down a set, but still found a way to win.”

The Pirates will compete in the Orange Empire Conference singles and doubles tournaments at Irvine Valley Tuesday at 1 p.m.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

San Diego State 11, UC Irvine 4SAN DIEGO — Gianna Rossi scored a game-high four goals in the No. 7-ranked Anteaters’ Mountain Pacific Sports Federation loss to the No. 6-ranked Aztecs Thursday.

Goalie Lauren Machanis had nine saves for UC Irvine (16-9, 3-7 in conference), which play at Arizona State Sunday at noon.
