BARNES EARNS HONOR

IRVINE — UC Irvine senior Ricky Barnes has been named Big West Conference male Athlete of the Week in track and field after winning two events at the Big West Challenge Cup Friday.

Barnes placed first in the 800 meters (1 minute, 52.90 seconds) and the 1,500 (3:47.39) in the competition at UC Santa Barbara. This is the second time that Barnes has earned the honor this season.

UCI’S YOVAN RECOGNIZED

IRVINE — UC Irvine senior Aaron Yovan has been named Big West Conference Player of the Week in men’s tennis for the fourth time this season.

Yovan defeated Mark Contreras of UC Riverside, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 1 singles match on April 7 for his fourth straight win at No. 1 singles. Yovan also teamed with senior Mustafa Ulukan to defeat Contreras and Joe Cartledge, 8-4, the pairing’s fourth consecutive win at No. 1 doubles.

The four Player of the Week honors for Yovan is the most in a single season for a UCI men’s tennis player.
