NEWPORT BEACH CITY COUNCIL WRAP-UP
Here are a few items the council considered Tuesday.
PELICAN HILL ROADA southbound right-turn lane from Newport Coast Drive onto Pelican Hill Road North will be redesigned for safety, following several rollover accidents by trucks that were turning. The council voted unanimously to hire RBF Consulting of Irvine to design the intersection changes. The contract could cost up to $100,000.
The project may include widening the existing turn lane, regrading the road and putting in raised medians. The most recent accident was Feb. 2 and involved a cement truck that rolled while making a turn at Newport Coast Drive and Pelican Hill Road North.
WHAT IT MEANS
The right-turn lane from Newport Coast Drive onto Pelican Hill Road North will be redesigned to make it safer.
SMART SPRINKLERSA program to get homeowners to install weather-controlled sprinkler systems has been so successful, the city will spend $94,800 to install 176 more systems. So far, 228 sprinkler controllers, which help conserve water and reduce runoff, have been installed and 75 are awaiting installation.
The additional controllers will be paid for through state grants and rebates from the Metropolitan Water District of Orange County, but the city is administering the sprinkler program.
WHAT IT MEANS
The city will continue to offer free “smart sprinkler” systems that use weather data to know when to water lawns and landscaping.
About 80% of Newport residents using the systems report they’ve cut their water consumption, according to city staff.
