42ND ANNUAL NEWPORT REGATTA:OCC overall winner

NEWPORT BEACH — The Orange Coast College crew won four of five races Saturday to claim the P.A. Palmer Cup that goes to the overall winner of the 42nd annual Newport Regatta in Newport Harbor.

OCC finished with 28 overall points, easily besting UCLA (12), UC San Diego (10), San Diego (six), USC (four) and UC Irvine (one).

The Pirates won the junior varsity eight race, completing the 2,000-meter course in 6 minutes, 4.1 seconds.

OCC also won the first novice eight race (5:53.5), the second novice eight race (6:04.1), and the novice four event (6:40.7).

The Pirates, coached by Larry Moore, were fourth in the varsity eight race, which was won by UCLA in 5:44.9.

OCC’s varsity eight finished in 6:00.3, while UCI was sixth in the six-boat field (6:08.6).

UCI was third in the novice fours (7:40.5), fourth in the second varsity eights (6:19.85) and fifth in the novice eights (6:27.3).
