Goin’ for the green

Activists and religious groups marched from Huntington Beach Pier to City Hall this week as part of the National Climate Day of Action.

The nationwide event asked mayors to sign the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, which aims to curb greenhouse gas production. Since the Huntington Beach City Council already endorsed the agreement this February, attendees presented Mayor Gil Coerper with a plaque in gratitude.

Councilwoman Debbie Cook, who put the agreement before the council for a vote, said she was in Boulder, Colo., that weekend for an energy conference and saw a similar demonstration there.

“I think it’s terrific that they did that,” Cook said of the marchers. “This is going on all over the country. Anything they can do to draw attention to this enormous task is great.”

With Earth Day on Sunday, several chances to volunteer for conservation or cleanup efforts are planned this weekend, including:

  • The California Department of Parks and Recreation will have an Earth Day Beach Cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Huntington State Beach after registration and refreshments at 8 a.m. Please wear closed-toe shoes. Volunteers will plant and pull weeds on the Least Tern and Snowy Plover Preserve. Call (714) 377-5691 or e-mail bburhans@parks.ca.gov.
  • The Bolsa Chica Land Trust and Amigos de Bolsa Chica are hosting a special planting event from 9 a.m. till noon Saturday at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, Pacific Coast Highway, between Seapoint Avenue and Warner Avenue. Participants should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes; gloves are recommended but optional. Call Kim Koplin at (714) 717-6304.
