FROM THE SPORTS DESK:Ah You ready for picking

His name is C.J. Ah You.

He’s a 6-foot-4, 265-pound defensive end out of Oklahoma University and he’s my pick for Mr. Irrelevant.

On page A13, you can find more information about the contest that starts today. The winner collects $500. I’m not eligible to enter, so rest assured you now have a better chance to win.

It seems sort of crazy to try and pick who will be the final pick of the NFL Draft when the Detroit Lions select on April 29. But it’s fun. And, funny. How can you not laugh at a name like Ah You?

Ah you kidding me?

Believe me, I’ve had plenty of people laugh (and have other reactions) at the expense of my last name, so I believe I have the right to poke fun at names. It’s great.

I told Irrelevant Week CEO Melanie Salata-Fitch my pick and she said it’s hers too.

“People could ask him, ‘Ah You Mr. Irrelevant?’ and he’ll say, “Yes, I am,’ ” she wrote to me in an e-mail.

But seriously, it you need some help on who to take with your final pick, keep reading here. Don’t be fooled by the names on the ad for the contest. A lot of those names will go on the first day.

You need to know who will be picked at No. 255, the final pick, the man who will become Mr. Irrelevant XXXII and then achieve celebrity status as he’s involved with parties and showered with gifts June 18-24.

According to Scout.com, the 255th-ranked player in the upcoming draft is center Mark Fenton from Colorado. He’s 6-4, 295 pounds and runs the 40 in 5.25 seconds. Awesome.

But if you’re the fan of the underdog, you will most likely go after quarterback Jared Zabransky. If you remember, he’s the one who led Boise State to that wild 43-42 overtime win over Oklahoma and was named MVP of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

Zabransky is also the cover boy of the new video game, EA’s NCAA Football ’08. A bit of background on Zabransky: he’s the son of a potato farmer and grew up in Hermiston, Ore.

I’m a Fresno State alumnus and cringe at the sight of the Smurf Turf, but even I like the kid.

He’s 6-2, 203 pounds, but is more known for his scrambling ability. He’s probably the fastest quarterback in the draft, with a 4.52 time in the 40. Most NFL draft projections don’t have him being taken. Instead he’s expected to get on a team via the rookie-free-agent route.

His college teammate is also an intriguing possible Mr. Irrelevant. That would be Legedu Naanee, a former quarterback who has played wide receiver the past two seasons.

Another receiver would be Syndric Steptoe. He’s 5-8, 196 pounds and runs the 40 in 4.59 seconds. Now that’s irrelevant.

But the Lions don’t need a receiver. Right?

Go ahead and guess what they need. You can’t go wrong.

But making that last pick will be difficult.

Ah You ready? Go.
