UC Irvine 10, UC Santa Barbara 5SANTA BARBARA — UC Irvine senior second baseman Cody Cipriano ended a zero for 17 slump with a third-inning double, then added a two-run home run and another double to finish three for five with two RBIs in the opener of a three-game Big West Conference series Friday.

No. 18-ranked UCI (27-10-1, 6-4 in conference) erased deficits of 4-1 and 5-4 to overcome the Gauchos (16-19, 4-3).

Cipriano’s ninth homer of the season capped a five-run sixth that included RBI singles from Aaron Lowenstein and Tyler Vaughn, as well as an RBI double by Ben Orloff.

Orloff (two for five) and Matt Morris (two for four) each had two RBIs for the Anteaters.

Scott Gorgen pitched eight innings to improve to 7-2, despite giving up five earned runs on six hits. UCSB senior Robbie Blauer, an Orange Coast College product, hit a solo home run, his fourth of the season.
