Orange Coast 5, Irvine Valley 4COSTA MESA — The Pirates scored one in the eighth inning and one in the ninth to force extra innings, then plated the game winner in the 11th in the Orange Empire Conference game Saturday at Orange Coast.

Its third straight victory helped OCC (21-16, 11-7 in conference) retain at least a share of second place in the Orange Empire. The Pirates entered Saturday’s action tied with Cypress, which they will play in road games Thursday (2:30 p.m.) and Saturday (noon) to conclude the regular season.

OCC visits IVC Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.

Cory Olson’s solo home run in the fourth inning erased a 2-1 deficit for the Pirates, but IVC (18-20, 6-12) forged a 4-2 lead in the eighth.

Orange Coast’s Eric Oliver scored on a Mike Ferraro fielder’s choice in the home half of the eighth, then the Pirates scored a run on an infield error in the ninth.

In the 11th, Nick Rotkowitz was hit by a pitch with one out. One out later, Olson doubled down the left-field line to put runners at second and third. After Ferrraro was intentionally walked, Chris Lum drove a pitch over the center fielder’s head for the game-winning RBI single.

Keith Demorgandie allowed one earned run in 4 1/3 relief innings to earn the win and improve to 5-2. He struck out six.

Olson finished three for five, while Lum and Halston Barcelo also had two hits for the winners.

UC Santa Barbara 6, UC Irvine 5SANTA BARBARA — The No. 18-ranked Anteaters left the bases loaded in the seventh and ninth innings in the second game of the Big West Conference series in Santa Barbara.

Bryan Petersen and Matt Morris singled with two outs and Nick Baligod was hit by a pitch to put the potential go-ahead run on second base against Gauchos’ closer Justin Segal in the ninth.

But Ollie Linton, who made the third out with the bases loaded in the seventh, flew out to center to end the game.

Ben Orloff, Cody Cipriano, Morris, Petersen and Aaron Lowenstein all had two hits for the Anteaters (27-11-1, 6-5 in conference). Cipriano drove in two runs, while Orloff and Morris had one RBI apiece. Orloff stole two bases for UCI, which can win the series with a victory in today’s 1 p.m. finale.

Mike Zaunich went three for four with two RBIs to pace six Gauchos with at least two hits. Former Orange Coast College standout Robbie Blauer was two for two and

UCI starter Wes Etheridge gave up five earned runs and 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings to absorb his second loss in 11 decisions this season.

UCSB starter Mike Ford (two earned runs allowed in six innings), improved to 2-1 and Segal posted a three-inning save, his seventh of the season.

The Gauchos improved to 17-19, 5-3.

Vanguard 20-21, 15-17 in conference) committed six errors to lose the opener. Fresno Pacific’s Justin Rhoades hit a grand slam to highlight the nightcap. Voorhies and Jason Machado had one double each in the second game.

Vanguard 1,Vanguard 5, HIU 4COSTA MESA — The eighth-ranked Lions received a scare from the visiting Royals in a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday.

Freshman second baseman Jenna Bergh hit a walk-off single to centerfield, bringing in sophomore third baseman Sarah Howe for the game-winning run in the Lions’ dramatic 5-4 victory in the nightcap. Bergh was two for three with three RBIs and one run scored. Howe led Vanguard (38-9, 16-4 in conference) with a three-for-four performance that included one RBI.

Vanguard junior pitcher Jen Olvera struck out 14 batters in her two-hit, complete-game shutout in the first game. She also scored the game-winning run on a throwing error in the bottom of the sixth inning. Olvera also gained the win in the second game with one scoreless inning of relief to improve to 18-2.

The Lions will play host to top-ranked Cal Baptist for a GSAC doubleheader Tuesday at 2 p.m.

MEN’S TENNIS

Boise State 6, UC Irvine 1BOISE, Idaho — Mustafa Ulukan earned the lone singles win for the visiting Anteaters in the nonconference match Saturday at the Appleton Tennis Center.

Ulukan defeated Blake Boswell, 4-6, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.

Ulukan teamed with Aaron Yovan to earn the Anteaters’ lone doubles victory, an 8-6 verdict against Piotr Dilaj and Luke Shields.

UCI fell to 11-1, while the No. 23-ranked Broncos extended their winning streak to 11 and improved to 27-5.
