Santa Barbara Tournament of ChampionsSANTA BARBARA — Junior middle blocker Gus Ellis earned all-tournament team honors after he helped lead Corona del Mar High to a fifth-place finish at Santa Barbara High Saturday.

Blaine Nielsen and Jeff Carlson recorded 11 kills each to contribute to the Sea Kings’ 22-25, 25-16, 25-23, 15-25, 15-13 win over Harvard-Westlake in the fifth-place match. Brad McCoy added eight kills and Dylan Davis five for the No. 1-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division II. CdM (24-2), also the No. 1 seed team in the tournament, got 11 digs from Spencer Brown. Phil Bannan finished with 43 assists and five blocks. Ellis produced eight kills and five blocks in the Sea Kings’ 25-19, 25-14, 25-17 win over San Luis Obispo in a fifth-place semifinal.

Santa Barbara Tournament of ChampionsSANTA BARBARA — Kyle Caldwell amassed 115 assists, 23 kills and nine blocks in two five-game victories for Newport Harbor High, which finished ninth in the 16-team tournament Saturday.

Tucker Peleuses had 31 kills in the two matches, 11 in the latter when the Sailors (14-11) defeated Clovis West, 25-18, 25-16, 21-25, 23-25, 15-9 in the ninth-place match.

Weston Dunlap had 30 kills and 10 blocks in the two wins, which included a 25-18, 24-26, 25-18, 27-29, 15-11 victory over Dos Pueblos to start the day. Mark Liebermann had 19 kills and four aces overall, and Boyd Tyrell-Grubbs had 21 digs.

BASEBALL

Costa Mesa 4, Oxford Academy 3COSTA MESA — Gabe Sanchez went two for four with two RBIs to help lead the Mustangs to a nonleague victory on Saturday.

Miguel Molina also added two hits for Costa Mesa (12-8). Mustangs pitcher Andrew Millian struck out four and scattered six hits in five innings to send Oxford Academy to 12-3-1.

Mesa will play host to Laguna Beach Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.
