Mustangs split with Breakers

LAGUNA BEACH — The Costa Mesa High boys’ and girls’ swim teams are both young, with just one senior — John Roche — on the entire squad.

But their youth was only partially served on Wednesday at Laguna Beach High, in an Orange Coast League meet with the Breakers.

The Mustang boys won easily, 109-53, but the Costa Mesa girls suffered a 90-78 loss. The boys (3-0 in league) finish an undefeated league dual meet season, while the girls (2-1 in league) fall into a three-way tie with Estancia and Laguna Beach, which figures to make next week’s league finals, also at Laguna Beach, wide open.

“Anybody can win it on the girls’ side,” Costa Mesa Coach Patty Smith said. “It’s going to be a fun meet. Whoever has the most depth will get it.”

For the Costa Mesa boys’ team, Wednesday’s dual meet was an exercise in dominance. Mesa failed to finish first in just one individual event, the 100-yard freestyle, where one of several Calvary Chapel swimmers at the meet got first. The Eagles have a very small team and had no girls’ swimmers.

Roche and junior Sam Edman each won a pair of events, with Roche capturing the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke and also swimming on the winning 200 medley relay. Edman won the 200 free and 500 free in CIF Southern Section Division II consideration times of 1 minute, 47.45 seconds and 4:55.45 seconds, respectively.

Edman also led off on the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

“The times were all my personal-bests, and they’re almost CIF [Division II] automatic times,” Edman said. “I’m still kind of tired, because I’m not fully tapered. I feel like I’m going to do even better in league finals.”

James Fowler won the 50 freestyle, and Cody Serrano won the 200 individual medley. The Mustangs also swept the top three spots in the 100 breast, thanks to Dane Shambrook, Travis Wright and Chingiz Bigalimov.

The Mustang girls, meanwhile, were playing catch-up from the very opening event, when Laguna Beach’s “A” and “B” 200 medley relays finished one-two.

Andrea Beyaoju won the 200 individual medley and 100 breast, and Patricia Marty won the 100 fly and 100 back.

Mesa also finished the meet strong, with Beyaoju, Hannah Speer and Kaci Decker sweeping the top three spots in the breaststroke and the 400 free relay team of Liz Simpson, Breanna Williams, Marty and Beyaoju winning by a wide margin.

“The back end of the meet is our strength,” Smith said.

But it wasn’t quite enough to catch the Breakers, who had Chelsea Wild win the 200 and 500 freestyles and water polo standout Annika Dries win the 50 free.

“We definitely didn’t overlook them,” Marty said. “Throughout the meet, we were trying to keep our game-faces on and go out strong in everything we did. They just got the better of us today.”

But she was also optimistic for the league finals, which has preliminaries May 1 and finals on May 3.

“We’re a team that tapers well, and we’ll all be ready to go get them next week,” Marty said.
