Civil rights director to talk at UCI

Ken Marcus, the staff director of the United States Commission on Civil Rights, plans to speak to UC Irvine students and faculty tonight about allegations of anti-Semitism on campus.

UCI has had several well-publicized instances of conflict between Jewish and Muslim students — the most recent occurring in January, when Muslims protested a speech on campus by pro-Israel historian Daniel Pipes. Since February, a research team from the Hillel Foundation of Orange County has been conducting interviews at UCI and plans to have a report finished by the end of the year.

Members of the UCI Hillel Jewish Student Union and Anteaters for Israel are expected to attend tonight’s lecture, which begins at 7 p.m. in Berkeley Place, Room 1101. The event is free and open to the public.
