With a helping of safety

Some customers at the South Coast Plaza Claim Jumper were a bit nervous to find two police cars and four motorcycles outside the restaurant Thursday evening, but there was no trouble.

More than 20 Costa Mesa police officers and about a dozen members of the support staff gathered for the countywide Tip-a-Cop fundraiser, teaming up with restaurant employees to serve tables and seat guests to raise money and awareness for the Orange County Special Olympics.

Officer Andy Abreu was feeling somewhat apprehensive about his serving duties, adding that being a waiter seemed more challenging than being a cop.

“I see them carrying around all those drinks, and I am afraid I’ll drop something,” he said. “But I watched ‘Cocktail’ like five times this week, so I think I’m ready.”

His serving partner, Ana Garrillo, was happy to have the additional help as they prepared to serve a party of 22.

“It’s always nice to have an extra hand,” she said.

Several employees from the Police Department’s records division attended the event as diners, excited about the change of pace.

“We usually serve them, so it’s nice having them serve us,” Natalie Sorenson said.
