NEWPORT BEACH CITY COUNCIL WRAP-UP

Here are a few items the council considered Tuesday.

SCIENCE CENTERThe council unanimously approved a lease and operating agreement with various agencies that helped build the Back Bay Science Center on Shellmaker Island.

Under the lease, the city will maintain the facility, and it will be operated by the state Department of Fish and Game, Orange County Health Care Agency and UC Irvine.

The multi-million-dollar center will house offices, labs and education space. The building is expected to be finished in June.

WHAT IT MEANSThe city will be responsible for maintenance but not major repairs at the Back Bay Science Center, which will open later this year.

HOSPITAL BONDSHoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian can sell up to $500 million in bonds to finance future projects, after the council voted to have the city issue the bonds.

It’s common for cities to help agencies, such as Hoag Hospital, that serve the public by issuing bonds, and the city carries no obligation for the debt.

WHAT IT MEANS

Hoag Hospital will sell bonds to cover future improvements to its facilities, and the hospital will pay the city a $200,000 service fee for handling the bond issuance.
