Orange Empire ConferenceMISSION VIEJO — The Orange Coast College men’s team ran away with the title scoring 803.50 points, while the OCC women also took first at Saddleback College Saturday.

Championships

OCC men’s winners included Jimmy Cule in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16 minutes, 22.91 seconds, Greg Hulse in the 100 free in 46.05 seconds, Elden Carpenter in the 200 breaststroke in 2:12.99 and Josh Knight in the 200 butterfly in 1:53.44. Grossmont finished in second with 508 points. The Pirates’ Justin Taylor was named the conference’s Male Diver of the Year, and OCC’s Anthony Iacopetti was honored as Coach of the Year.

The OCC women scored 589.50 points, 60 more than second-place Grossmont. The Pirates’ 400 free relay won in 3:44.68.

BASEBALL

UC Davis 3, UC Irvine 2IRVINE — Tyler Vaughn, Taylor Holiday, Cody Cipriano and Sean Madigan each had two hits, but the No. 16-ranked Anteaters could not overcome a 3-0 deficit in the nonconference game Saturday.

The loss dropped the Anteaters to 30-12-1 while the Aggies climbed to 15-24 overall.

UC Davis’ Kevin James staked the Aggies to a 3-0 lead with a three-run home run off starter Wes Etheridge in the top of the second.

The series finale is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start today.

MEN’S TENNIS

UC Santa Barbara 4,INDIAN WELLS — Aaron Yovan, Mustafa Ulukan and Shimpei Suzuki won in singles, but the No. 2-seeded Anteaters lost in the semifinal of the Big West Championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Saturday.

UC Irvine 3

Yovan and Ulukan won at No. 1 doubles, but the third-seeded Gauchos won the other two doubles to earn the team point. The Anteaters finished tied for the third in the tournament with UC Riverside.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 4,INDIAN WELLS — The top-seeded Anteaters were upset by the fifth-seeded Mustangs in a semifinal of the Big West Championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Saturday.

UC Irvine 3

Claire Fermin and Ali Borowicz won at No. 3 and 6 singles, respective. The Anteaters (21-4) won two of three doubles matches to earn the team point. UC Irvine finished the tournament tied for third with Cal State Northridge.

The Anteaters will await a potential NCAA at-large bid to be announced next week.

Point Loma Nazarene 7,Point Loma Nazarene 9,SAN DIEGO — With 12 hits in each game, No. 4-ranked Point Loma Nazarene upended the No. 8-ranked Lions in a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader that was the regular-season finale Saturday.

With the wins, Point Loma Nazarene moved into second and Vanguard finished third. Top-ranked Cal Baptist won the GSAC.

Sarah Howe led Vanguard (39-11, 17-7 in conference) with a two-for-three performance that came with one run in the second game. Melissa Forrester and Jennifer Bergh added an RBI each for that game.

Allie Boeckelman led Point Loma Nazarene (36-8, 18-6) with four RBIs overall.

The Lions committed two errors in the first game and three in the nightcap.

Both teams now await the Region II Tournament, which begins May 8.
