COMMUNITY & CLUBS:Mr. Irrelevant to be announced

Former NFL, USC football player and Irrelevant Week founder Paul Salata will have the honor of announcing the 2007 Mr. Irrelevant draft pick from the 2007 NFL Draft, which wraps up today in New York City.

Irrelevant Week is an annual gala at the end of June that honors the last player chosen in the NFL Draft with a series of events in Newport Beach. Exact dates are yet to be determined.

The 32nd annual Irrelevant Week kicks off with the All-Star Lowsman Trophy Banquet. The banquet celebrates Mr. Irrelevant with a roast by past and present famous sports figures, and honors him with the Lowsman Trophy — a trophy depicting a player fumbling a football to honor the “non-achievements” of the NFL Draft’s final pick. The weeklong celebration concludes with an arrival party and news conference that features the official introduction of Mr. Irrelevant 2007.

RELAY FOR LIFE

The sixth annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Newport Beach will be held for 24 hours on May 19 and 20, starting at 10 a.m. at the Newport Harbor High School, 600 Irvine Ave., Newport Beach. Last year, the Newport Beach community raised $130,000 for cancer education, advocacy, research and services.

Teams of 10 to 15 people from all walks of life camp out at the school and take turns walking or running around the track. Each team has a representative on the track at all times while special entertainment, music and fun activities keep things lively.

The business community, service clubs, congregations and school groups are encouraged to form relay teams, which in turn find sponsors. Online team registration and information about sponsorship, volunteering and donations are available at www.acsevents.org/relay/ca/newportbeach, or call Krisztine Scheeff at (949) 357-5747.
