Today begins a new chapter for the Daily Pilot. Your local newspaper, which is celebrating 100 years of serving the community, has a new look, a new feel and a pinch of new attitude.

Starting with the front page, we have changed the fonts and the headline styles and have made the paper quicker to read and easier to navigate. In addition to the new look, we’ve added some new features for news, opinion, entertainment and sports (turn to Page A20 for specifics on Sports).

Monday: Business Watch will provide a deeper look at local businesses and trends. And Alicia Lopez’s In the Mix column will chronicle Costa Mesa’s vibrant Latino community. Inside, we will have a regular On Vacation photo page. And a new feature called Pol Position on the Forum page will give local politicians a sounding board.

Tuesday: Longtime Pilot columnist Steve Smith moves here to cover schools and youth, and a new Reader Photo page will be unveiled.

Wednesday: A new photo feature called Scene and Herd will provide snapshots of local events.

Thursday: Our Happenings page of arts and entertainment moves to this day and will include a new restaurant review column. The Forum pages will also feature two new columnists, Barbara Venezia and Byron de Arakal, who will be published every other week.

Friday: This day will continue to provide our Shopping at its Best coverage, and a question-and-answer feature, called Behind the Headlines, will be found on the Forum page.

Saturday: We will debut a new front-page columnist, Jim Righeimer, who will write on conservative issues.

Sunday: Our Sunday Story will continue to be the place to find premiere enterprise reporting from our staff of writers and editors. Also, we will feature a weekly page called Town Square, in which citizen journalists’ news reports and tidbits will be welcome.

In addition to all of this, we have made the relationship between our print and Internet editions much clearer, paving the way into the multimedia future.

We have made these changes after many painstaking months of discussion and debate, always keeping in mind our readers and advertisers. It is our sincere hope that you like this new look and find much to read. Please send your feedback to dailypilot@latimes.com.
