BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:This toy department gets a good-looking renovation

Welcome to the new Sports section of the Daily Pilot.

Just like on the other pages, you’ll find that Sports is better packaged than before. And on this rail, we have, “Beyond the Box Score,” that will include quick hits, information that you don’t typically find in a statistics box or a game story.

Specifically on Thursdays, you won’t have to wait two days to find out who is the other high school athlete of the week. That’s because Thursday’s left column of Sports will feature both prep athletes of the week. The feature stories will still be coming, one on Thursday and the other on Saturday.

On Friday, sports writer Matt Szabo will start his new weekly column, focusing on fantasy sports for all you rotisserie geeks. But it won’t survive without questions and suggested tips from the community. To submit questions and tips, send an e-mail to Matt at matthew.szabo@latimes.com.

On Mondays, a portion of Sports will feature local golf and will be called, “Golf Scene.”

On Wednesdays, we’ll have youth results and other announcements for, “Youth Scene.”

Thursday, Friday and Saturday will include up-to-date local coverage on the prep scene, provided by David Carrillo Peñaloza and Szabo.

Tuesdays you can read about colleges, as reporter Barry Faulkner provides his insight.

Community sports will also make appearances, most notably next week when the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals comes to Huntington Beach. New staffer Soraya Nadia McDonald will be there to cover the action.
