Pelican Hills Road South Reopens after petition

Pelican Hill Road South will reopen today at noon after months of construction on the Irvine Co.’s golf resort kept it closed to residents. Since January 2006, people who live in neighborhoods off the loop road have had to use Pelican Hill Road North.

Irvine Co. officials wanted the road closed until September 2008, but Newport Coast residents petitioned to get it reopened, citing fears that in an emergency they’d be stuck in their homes. Now they’ll share the road with construction vehicles, which will be working on the resort for another 18 months.

At Pelican Hill Road North, Newport Beach city leaders are planning improvements to the intersection with Newport Coast Drive, where there have been five truck rollover accidents between July 2004 and February 2007.
