SOCCERCosta Mesa 3, Tustin 0: Brian Zamudio scored twice and Edgar Rodriguez added a goal in Costa Mesa’s win on April 28 in the advanced play program division.

Boys under 14 (APP)

Neither team scored in the first quarter, but Mesa defenders Teddy Prescott, Christian Rodriguez and Juan Vences did a great job pushing the ball up-field to the midfielders. Zamudio, Richard Bello and Edgard Rodriguez all had shots on goal.

Christian Rodriguez assisted Edgar Rodriguez’s second-quarter goal, with great effort by Cory Frino and Jordan Young and solid midfield play by Jason Anaya making the goal possible.

In the third quarter, Costa Mesa goalie Edgar Vega made a diving save, and Jovany Castillo passed the ball back up the field.

Midfielder Tony Rodriguez made some great plays in the later quarter, and Zamudio scored on Eddie Saavedra’s assist. With a minute left in the game, Zamudio scored the third goal.

AYSO Region 97Newport Breakers 5, Irvine 1: The Breakers scored all five of their goals in the second half to earn the win.

Girls under 12 (APP)

Madison Mastera scored in the third quarter off a nice pass from Paige Tennison, then Tennison also scored before Irvine scored a goal to stay close. Newport put the game away in the fourth quarter, scoring three unanswered goals.

Delaney McCardle and Katherine Maddox scored goals, along with a second goal by Tennison. Taury Hlinka and Brinley Siemonsma had assists. Mollie Friend, Alex Steiner, Kirsten Rohan played defense for Newport. Along with Layne More in goal, they kept Irvine away from their goal for the better part of the game. Hannah Nance, Sarah Daly, and Kelsey Long helped Newport control the field and had many near-misses on their own shots at the Irvine goal.

Girls under 12

Wahinis vs. Monkeys: The Monkeys scored first, but the Wahinis answered with two goals in the first half scored by McKenna Johnson. Defensive plays by Julia Frei, Carly Christian and Katheryn Snell kept the ball up-field for the most of the game. Page Keys tapped in the third score with a great assist by Brenda Luna. Nicole Franco and Samantha Sanchez sparkled as midfielders and in the net for the Wahinis, and Johnson scored another goal in the fourth quarter.

Boys under 10

Dominators vs. Strikers: The Dominators scored plenty against a Striker team that showed a lot of heart and composure and kept fighting until the final whistle. Riley Brockman led the Dominators with three goals for his second hat trick this season. Ryan Balkey contributed with two goals of his own, supported by two more goals from Mikey Ischlinger and Devon Patterson. The Dominators executed their defense spectacularly, with tenacious play by Reef McCoy, Iggy Nieves and Micah Adelsohn, helping shut out the Strikers.

Girls Under 8

Tidal Waves vs. Yellow Monkeys: The Tidal Waves put together a great team effort. Julia Ackerman, Destry Comp and Hannah Alderson put on dribbling displays, with Comp and Ackerman combining for four goals. Missy Taylor earned an assist. Emma Hammond, Sienna Amoroso and Lauren Henke created a defensive wall in support of goalies Brianna Smith and Vanessa Crandall. Maile Raventos had several key touches on the ball in the midfield.

AYSO 120Costa Mesa wins 4-0: In the first quarter, Brian Zamudio dribbled the ball down the field, scoring the first goal of the game on April 21. Defenders Teddy Prescott, Juan Vences, and Christian Rodriguez kept their opponents from scoring.

Boys under 14 (APP)

In the second quarter, the Costa Mesa Eagles had a free kick which was taken by Christian Rodriguez, who scored the second goal of the game. Jovany Castillo, Edgar Rodriguez, and Richard Bello consistently pushed the ball up the field in the second quarter. Jordan Young and Tony Rodriguez provided great support by continuing to push the ball up the field to the forwards.

Goalie Edgar Vega protected the net by making a spectacular save. In the fourth quarter, Richard Bello crossed the ball and Edgar Rodriguez headed the ball into the goal for the game’s third goal.

In the fourth quarter, Richard Bello crossed the ball to Cory Frino, who glided the ball into the goal for the final goal of the game.

Majors Division

Phillies 4, Brewers 0: Dante Capoccia pitched a no-hitter in the Phillies’ victory on April 28. Capoccia gave up only three walks, struck out 12 and didn’t allow a runner to get past second base as the Phillies stopped the first-place Brewers’ eight-game winning streak.

Phillies third baseman Matt Thomas made a great play to rob the Brewers of a hit in the second inning, fielding a one-hop smash and throwing out the runner. Thomas also had a hit and scored on a two-RBI single by Matt Jarmacz in the Phillies’ three-run first inning. Daniel Lee had a single and scored a run, Bill Crosson had an RBI single and Nathan Frank doubled for the Phillies.

Jesse Paz struck out eight in three innings for the Brewers.

Newport Harbor Baseball Assn.

Mustang Division

Citrus Motors 12, Kincaid Construction 7: Citrus Motors (12-1-1) wrapped up the NHBA Mustang division regular-season title with its win on April 28.

Citrus was led by pitchers Nick Belida, Jeremiah Sheldon and Jake Genova, who all had multi-hit games, as did Luke Genova, Chase Alibrando and Mike Lugo. Cole Gallishaw had an RBI triple. Zane Waysz and Layne Hilley each contributed with walks and defensive support.

Mitch Steinke and Dave Schaeffer also contributed heartily to the winning season.
