NORMAN CHARLES LUMIAN

1929 -2007

Norman Lumian, former Newport Beach resident, passed away quietly in Eugene, Oregon on April 27, 2007. Proud of his New England background, he was born in Boston, Massachusetts and graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts. He served as a Sergeant in the US Marine Corps and then attended Harvard University where he received his Master of Arts Degree in 1954. He taught History and coached Track at Morningside High School and Aviation High School before coming to Orange Coast College in 1959. He was a Professor of History and Track and Cross Country Coach. He wrote “This Living America”, a history text book used in community colleges and high schools. He spent many years researching minorities and their immigration histories. His work was included in “American Ethnics and Minorities” and “Unity and Diversity”. He was a familiar figure in local running circles and participated in many marathons as a veteran runner here and overseas. He is survived by his sons, David Lumian of Venice, CA and Jonathan Lumian of Moreno Valley, grandson, Joel Hirokazu Lumian and former wife, Gerry Lumian. He will be greatly missed.
